And de Silva prevents the hat trick with a magnificent strait-ish off drive for 4.

SL 4/53.

And, rather ridiculously, it is de Silva who is out for 4, having made 0 from his last 12 deliveries.

This is not going well for SL, but there is a bigger picture:

"The game is uniquely qualified to speak to Sri Lanka in harrowing times, because there is no pursuit that cuts through race, religion, caste and class in the country quite as comprehensively. Resoundingly popular in the north - where cricket survived the deprivations of the decades-long civil war - as it is in the wild south-east, or up in the tea-growing hills, it is at once a sport beloved by the working- and middle classes, as it is controlled by elites. Once a weapon used by British to subjugate and divide ..., cricket has in modern times become a showcase of a unified Sri Lanka..."

It's early days, but we have half the makings of a good WC: low scores from one side. If we can get consistently low scores from both sides, that would be great.

So, The Ghanis have got to the end of their first over batting with just the one wicket down.

Afghanistan win toss, bat.
2/5 (1.2).

There may not be much batting practice. That would have been the advantage of batting first.

And Cummins only has the one wicket, as well from his first three deliveries. That's probably because the first was a no ball and the second was hit straight up in the air for a catch from the free hit. Anyway, with a bit of luck, they'll steady the ship and make it to the end of Cummins' over without further mishaps.
