Good call Donny. Madonna is incredibly overrated (especially by Madonna herself!)

I rate "Like A Prayer" as one of the best songs I've ever heard. It actually bring tears to my eyes sometimes.

To be honest I didn't think anyone but Madonna rated her.

Agreed. I LOVE that song.

Madonna is brilliant. Not technically a great singer, but her voice is perfect for the songs she does.

In "Like A Prayer" it's actually the gospel backing singers and the superb production that raise the song to great heights.

The problem with this poll is all the names that have been left out ... Dusty Springfield ... Ella Fitzgerald ... Peggy Lee ... Tina Turner ... Lady Day ... Delta G ... Joan Baez ... Cilla Black ... Sandie Shaw ... Poly Styrene ... Grace Slick ... the list goes on.

By the way ... I was only joking when I said Delta Laughing

Tess, I think maybe you're getting falsetto and vibrato confused. Very Happy

Falsetto - noun: a male singing voice with artificially high tones in an upper register
adjective: artificially high; above the normal voice range

From Wiki: The Bee Gees sang tight three-part harmonies that were instantly recognizable; as brothers their voices blended perfectly, not unlike the Beach Boys. Barry sang lead on many songs, and an R&B falsetto introduced in the disco years; Robin provided the clear vibrato lead that was a hallmark of their pre-disco music; Maurice sang high and low harmonies throughout their career.

From Experts: Bee Gees The. http://experts.about.com/q/Bee-Gees-389/Stupid-question.htm

Was Barry the only one who sang the falsetto part of the harmonies, or did they all sing falsetto? (Especially the Spirits Having Flown album)

Thanks!

#1 Bee Gees fan in Arizona

Answer
Hello!
I am glad to answer your question! I am glad to hear that there are other BEE GEE fans out there! Ok, the answer to your question, yes Barry was the only one to sing the falsetto part of the harmonies. Spirits Having Flown, is a great album huh? Hope I could be of some help. Bye Now

Just on Madonna. I'm not contending she's overrated. She just doesn't rate with many of the great voices mentioned in this topic.

The fan ASKED the question. The Bee Gees expert answered it. Wink

"a near successful stab at aping brother Barry's famous falsetto" hardly gives Robin a falsetto voice.

These are also woman that have lasted the test of time.

Durham, Harry, Carpenter, Joplin and co havent been around at the top of their genre for decade after decade.

Give me an idea also of the greatest male singers and the groups you'd like to see in a poll for the Nicks number one spot.

Might say alot about us and our taste in Muzac.

Those would probably be the obvious ones - Elvis, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain etc.

My votes would be in the direction of Trent Reznor, Maynard Keenan or Matt Bellamy but I doubt they're going to feature Laughing

John Lennon, Kurt Cobain obvious ?

I believe 'great male singers' was mentioned, not famous dead rock stars.

Trent, Maynard and Matt who ?

Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Maynard James Keenan (A Perfect Circle/Tool) and Matt Bellamy (Muse). Probably all a bit after your time, but the last two are well known for their vocal talents.

Isn't greatness sort of a subjective thing though? (Although even I wouldn't claim that the three I mentioned have been around long enough to qualify.) As for Lennon and Cobain, they were 'great', and they were singers... not so sure about the male part, but hey you can't win everything Wink

Speaking of dead...a bit difficult, as requested by Tess, for K Carpenter or J Joplin to be top of their heap decade after decade if they've left the planet before a couple of those decades have taken place.

Pica, the topic is: (Vote for your) Greatest female singer. Nothing mentioned about still being alive.

For instance, Judy died 37 years ago. Janis J. and Karen K. both did enough to be considered, at least in their own genres: Blues/rock and MOR/Pop.

David, this IS my time. I know where each of those singers fit into the scene. My 'who' was more an indication of your own "(Although even I wouldn't claim that the three I mentioned have been around long enough to qualify.)" than not having heard of them.

I suppose 'great' can be taken as 'great voice' or 'great career' with perhaps Madonna and *Peter Garrett being examples of the two not necessarily amounting to the same thing.

I've taken it to mean great voice which certainly encompasses Judy, Barb and Aretha (and others mentioned) and for the men, and apart from the obvious operatic/classical voices like Pavorotti, Caruso, Lanza etc., singers like Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Sinatra, Nat 'King' Cole and Elvis quickly come to mind.

Other great voices in Rock alone such as Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Robert Plant, Jim Morrison and Freddy Mercury etc. jump out from my record/CD collection.

Oz: Doug Parkinson, Bon Scott, Billy Thorpe, John Farnham and Ross Wilson are up there.

*For you, David. I have every Midnight Oil LP/CD but no Madonnas. Wink
