Well if I'm 'left', so be it. I never chose to be. In fact, I'm not really quite sure what being 'left' or 'right' is. I guess 'left' is a good thing yeh. Smile

Even so, I'm sure there's some 'right' view out there that I can agree with. Is there?

I'm not a huge fan of unions. Only because of the way some operate. But, I do believe they serve a purpose, providing that purpose is not too self indulgent. What does that make me?

*sigh* ... surely I'm confused Confused

Welll quite frankly mr franki, you're goiing left and right so quickly you're going to give yourself whiplash. And you won't be al right then....right?

Typical Emu...head in the sand Laughing

Dave try reading novels and Short Stories by Phillip K Dick (Bladerunner, Total Recall) He has Novels and short stories that deal with communities of the future dominated by right or left wing thinking and how it affects society in the future. Classed a s science fiction, but I believe is more Social Future Fiction.

Absolutely.

I've never considered myself left, right, in between or wherever and refuse to be pigeon holed into any such categories.

Sorry Omar Smile

You can consider yourself whatever you want, but you're definitely on the left side of things. Razz

Lets not be ashamed of who we are, or hide behind fuzzy "lets all be friends" stuff. Some examples:

I will not be friends with somebody who denies the stolen generation and the abuse of Indigenous Peoples throughout our racist history.

I will not be friends with somebody who refuses to accept immigrants/refugees into this country with open arms.

I will not be friends with somebody who is consciously sexist, homophobic, or xenophobic in any way. Yes, we all have these traits, but those of us with a decent perspective are constantly trying to work on being more open minded. Those that are not will never be people I get along with and want to "negotiate with".

I will not be friends with people who think that education, health, safety, transport, employment, etc. are privileges, not basic human rights.

Obviously you don't have to be a socialist to pass this rigorous selection process, but there are some ideas that are just WRONG, and I don't think we need to pretend to tolerate them. Lets take John Howard for example. The damage he did to refugees, the environment, the Iraqi and Afghani people, East Timor, workers' rights, economic equality (GST), women's rights, GLBT rights, etc.... it's just f@#king unacceptable. Dave is the closest thing I have to a friend that doesn't despise him, and there's a reason for that; Howard's ideas are not okay, are not tolerable, and are not "equally valuable".

They're disgusting.

You forgot

I will not be friends with anybody who does not support Collingwood.

This is a very interesting debate.

I find people claiming to have "open minds" yet having a long list of non negotiables on which they won't engage on debate because they ARE abhorrent (rather than they believe them to be abhorrent) to be an oxymoron. That's just intolerance and closed mindedness.

Anyone who has fixed opinions on a subject and who isn't open to discussion has a closed mind on the subject

As someone else said banning everything you personally disagree with is just a totalitarian regime dressed up as something different.

Who the hell says that people with left wing views are more open minded than anyone else? They're just as fixed and defensive of their opinions than anyone else. In fact, usually more so.

Similar to David, I don't identify with either left or right ring beliefs. The people who try to pigeon hole me into one, that's your view but newsflash - just because you believe it doesn't mean it's right.

Well I am staggered, but according to this website, I am more towards the Centre-Left. I though I would be more centre right but I seem to have strong views on a number of issues that Lefts are passionate about.

I think my hate for religion may have pushed me towards the left and the fact I have no issue against same sex couples. However my capitalist nature may have lifted me towards the Authoritarian side.

Yet the unions I'm going to be meeting with over the next 2 days and some people on here would accuse me of being slightly to the right of Genghis Khan. Who're the ones with the closed minds? Confused

hehe.

I'm not really sure about that analysis. It puts me in a similar area to Gandhi, Mandela and The Dalai Lama. Surely I'm more evil than that!

Tell me about your likes and dislikes? That remark was either too complex or too simple for me. We were talking about he or she'm not sure about that analysis.

I was practically smack bang in the middle, slightly on the left side, according to that one. Then again, as I said in another thread, I think some of the questions might have been a bit loaded, and also U.S. centred.

edit: Tildy just completed it, and she was pretty much exactly the same! Talk about kindred spirits Very Happy

Well Mandela was, at one stage, head of the militant wing of the ANC. So maybe you're just identifying with that "evil" part of his past. hehe.

Luckily for all concerned his mind was not so closed off to debate, and re-assessment of his own ideas.

Are you really a "it"? Tell me more about your he or she would like someone to explain to him or her how Acker left clues to make it obvious that it was Braun I was referring to. If you could have any kind of robot what would it be? I like the way you talk.
