Why does he need to make an announcement?
I didn't when my gf and I hooked up as I'm sure most people on here didn't.

I'm on the side of, "Who gives a ferk what his sexual orientation is"

What is the pre-occupation with anybody's sexuality?????

I know 2 women who were recently on the Kerry Anne Kennerly Show. They were guests to discuss Transgender issues and to discuss the Transgender Support Group they run. Yes, they have both had male to female sex changes.

However, Kerry Anne Kennel was more focused on their sexuality than the Transgender issues and kept asking them what their sexuality was now.

None of her fn business from my point of view..........just as Ian Thorpe's, or anyone else's sexuality is nobody else's business.

Sorry Tess, but I think you took Dave's comments the wrong way.

Um, Frank... I think we agree on this one.

That can't be right! Shocked Razz

Nothing wrong with agreeing with each other David.
Perhaps it shows we are not that far apart on many 'real world' issues Wink

I find it a little hypocritical that those suggesting Thorpe must come out, would scream discrimination, if they were forced to publicly 'air' anything to do with their own sexuality.

If it's true what they say about feet, I feel real sorry for his partner. Shocked

People who think the oppression felt by the LGBTI community is history are kidding themselves.

That's all I have to say.

I don't think anybody has suggested this.

Whatever the case, I certainly don't believe it. Homophobia is absolutely rife, although having said that I think this generation are far more accepting of diverging sexualities than past ones have been, and this is a trend that will probably continue. All the same, I would say it will probably be another couple of generations before we can start talking about discrimination against LGBTI communities being a thing of the past.

That, however, has no bearing on my stance on this issue. Thorpe is not a representative or spokesman of the gay or (on a broader level) LGBTI communities, and neither should his particular sexuality (whatever it may be) make him such. Yes, perhaps if he 'came out', this could be of benefit to the LGBTI community and wider acceptance of homosexuality. I understand that. Regardless, Thorpe has no duty to do so, and he should feel under no pressure whatsoever to discuss his private life.

Once again, I very much feel that most of the reason that we are even talking about this is down to the gossip merchants who stand poised waiting for Thorpe to 'out' himself. That alone makes me completely supportive of Thorpe if he chooses not to discuss his sexuality publically.

The whole reason that being queer is more accepted today than it was 50 years ago is due to the fact that massive numbers of people have had the courage to proclaim their sexuality proudly, and have demanded their right to be out and proud. Talking about privacy misses the whole point: it IS a political act due to the sheer reality of oppression. Remember, homosexuality was illegal not too long ago, and the laws didn't change by accident. The changes were fought for. So then:

I'm not saying Thorpe (or anybody else) should be outed against their will.

I'm not saying we should be demanding that people out themselves.

I'm not saying we should be discussing people's sex lives in detail.

What I AM saying (and I think Tess is on the same page here) is that it would be a great thing if more people were able to come out and do so in a proud manner. Those of us with commitments to fighting against homophobia and LGBTI oppression should support people in this process.
