Def need Maxy's leadership after Friday night - we looked looked lost down back as a collective Group. Reid is a quality defender but his strength is not when the ball hits the ground, Tarrant is a lot better when the ball hits the ground.

Some of the midfield pressure was so so and when the ball got over our defensive zone and offensive 50 we got opened up and we did have three first gamers dont forget

When wellingham and beams are back that is going to help our rotations and they were in the best for VFL. One strategy that needs consideration is how we are going to work the second ruckman moving forward - down think Dawes worked

Like the look of Paine though - think he is going to be another Gem from Hine

Forgot to mention Harry's game - best just to scratch that as was a shocker - two much turnover at half back which kills you

I love his work ethic and precise (usually) delivery. Agree he'll be better value as a wingman than a defender, although at times on Friday night I thought he was so intent on defence he forgot how to be attacking. Thrilled to have him back though and can't wait to see what he can give us when he's back in the swing with a handful more games under his belt.

Harry though... I dunno, is he as good as we thought he was?

Clarke should play on he wing. Obrien not true defender. Does not like the ball moving in deep. Need Reid and Brown together with Tarrant and Maxwell I.e 3/4 of our true back line mising. Obrien with Toovey and Johnson really running half back flankers.

Also Dawes needs time in the Magooes.

Harry is at his best when other are playing the discipline role down back. His flair and run complements the solid work of our back line. But against the Hawks, he needed to stop the flamboyant and play the role of a back man given that with 133 games experience, he was one of the most experienced players down back and had to provide leadership to the youngsters.

What the game showed is that Harry is not Captain material and his on field leadership is close to non existent.

He'll be fine once we get Maxy and co back.

Clarke looked ok I thought. He'll blossom when he can use his skill and pace on the wing with confidence the back line isn't leaking goals.

would rather clarke up the ground also
Said it before, could hardly blame the defenders even though a few were down given the way the ball moved out of our forward line and from the middle when Hawthorn were getting on top of the clearances

Clarke needs more time to adjust to the new playing style. Remember he hasn't played since 09 and football has changed a lot since then. Judging by the standard I've seen over the weekend, we can expect a fast and physical style of football for 2012 and anyone who is not up to it will be found out. I think Clarke will come good. He needs to back himself more, be prepared to put his body on the line to win the hard ball and tackle. He's already got the speed and skill. Same goes with our debutantes from round 1. There more exposure they get to footy on the big stage, the more they will improve.

I agree that he was ok. My observation wasnt that he was terrible, its that i dont think his disposal is up to it and i dont think he reads the game well enough to make it. Did you see in the third quarter when he started to chase a man 20 metres up the ground who was in the clear on the wing and then half way through, he turned around and chased his own man realizing he was just about guaranteeing the hawks a goal?
