So the West Coast , Adelaide , Brisbane , Port Adelaide , Sydney and Fremantle fans should have the Grand Final played at their home State venue in future years when they qualify for it ?

And should premierships only count from 1987 when WCE & Bris entered or 1990 when the VFL became the AFL , and us winning the first AFL Premiership.

Huh?

I don't really see the point you're trying to make.

All I'm saying is that a day grand final no longer seems very relevant in light of AFL football no longer being a suburban Saturday afternoon pursuit and the fact that night football long ago overtook afternoon footy as the preferred viewing/spectator experience for the public, the AFL and the television networks.

Of course we shouldn't disregard the definitive history of the game and the fact that the MCG is the premier sporting stadium for the premier sporting code in the country. But we also mustn't deny our sports biggest day a chance to develop and improve because of some outdated link to a past that went the way of the drop kick and the duffel coat a long, long time ago.

A twighlight game starting say at 6-7 pm is fine & I support it because the view, the vibe, the atmosphere & the spectacle is wonderful at night.

Corporates need to be breath tested before entry: Raised alcohol levels & halitosis bars entry.

This should be a members only event first & foremost for participating club members. The rest can please themselves.

However, the price we pay is not merely metaphorical, this will be corporate more than ever & will serve to push ordinary fans further away from attending the GF.

That is the downside & a huge downside it is.

Maybe I'm too much of a traditionalist but I'm completely against the idea of a twilight or night Grand Final!

The current format works fine and if we're going to base the day Grand Final on last year's game between Hawthorn and Fremantle then I think that's silly because it was just one of those boring Grand Finals with a predictable result in the end. Hawthorn were constantly playing a chip kicking style of football and Fremantle was playing its ultra defensive game plan under Ross Lyon. As a result the match was boring and very unspectacular but in previous years we've had magnificent with very good atmospheres despite the corporate element being prevalent on these days.

The atmosphere at Grand Final is considered to be somewhat 'poor' in recent times because of the commercialisation of the game and the way corporates obtain many of the best seats at the MCG. If 'true' footy fans were to gain all 100,000 seats at the MCG the atmosphere would be electric on Grand Final day on a traditional Saturday afternoon.

I hate the idea that this is strongly being considered but I have a bad feeling that it is inevitable that the Grand Final is going to be played at a time other than the traditional 2:30pm timeslot. A twilight Grand Final is awful timing for many people and a night Grand Final just has a copycatting written all over it. I'd rather that we stay traditional and unique.

I love Pendles as a footballer but I completely disagree with his viewpoints on this one. The Super Bowl and the AFL Grand Final are incomparable. The Super Bowl is always about entertaining the masses pre-match or at half-time. The match itself is boring that the crowd needs to be pleased through other forms of entertainment. The Grand Final doesn't need any other forms of entertainment to draw people into the gates of the MCG. That's why I've always believed that Grand Final entertainment is overrated to say the least because people will turn up regardless of whether there is other forms of entertainment or not.

I just hope the AFL can preserve at least one tradition! Rolling Eyes

Once it goes to a night Grand Final , there should be then no reason why the AFL wouldn't play the Grand Final interstate when an interstate team qualifies for it.

Nothing like growing the game even more than playing the Grand Final in that state think if Gold Coast qualify in the future for one.

The AFL may even take away the team that finishes higher rule , eg last year could have been play Freo v Haw at Subiaco twilight GF have your normal $ 2000 corporate tix but club members tix would be $500-600 , and have massive ratings in the eastern states.

The AFL would then have a totally clean stadium , no MCC members and No AFL members to allocate half the stadium to.

They could charge more per ticket via travel packages for the visiting teams fans and other interstate attendees.

Just because the AFL "has a contract" to play the Grand Final at the MCG doesn't mean anything.

The AFL break contracts when ever they like they might even give the MCG a few extra home and away games the next year to make up the difference.

The Premierships debate is used by interstate fans that no Premierships should count pre 1987 or 1990 , ie we would have 2 instead of15 etc

This is the same Captain that felt the traditional FamilyDay was beneath him as he headed overseas for the Superbowl. Some excused him as this was a once in a lifetime event, well what's being made Captain of Collingwood an everyday event?

He hasn't started well IMO.

Let me see here, being live at the Super Bowl in New York versus CFC Family Day.

I know which I'd choose.

How about, Super Bowl <<<>>> captain of Collingwood!

Still an easy choice?

Bring it on. But I want it on a Sunday night and a public holiday the day after.
