A very good win. The kind of win a premiership contender has.

They did what Roos' teams do: clog it up and prevent any fast scoring. And as always, especially against us, the fatal flaw is not being able to score enough themselves. We did a great job of putting some pressure on their little leadup passes and then making sure they had nowhere to go when they tried to go forward. End result: only 3 Melbourne goals.

In the end what we had was a percentage booster: 218%. Which is more like a 60-70 point margin.

Young was very good today. Best on field and his best game for the club. Brilliant run and some great foot skills.

Seedsman could have got more of the ball, but some of the runs he did provide were electric.

Cloke worked his way into the game and had a decent one by the end.

Grundy was excellent in the first half. Faded a bit but was far better than Witts who was ordinary.

Thomas acquitted himself better than Adams did last week after a shocking first quarter where he did not touch the ball. Finished with 20 touches. Only 1 clearance though, and I think the last two weeks have shown that Ball is still our number 1 primary extractor.

Actually our percentage only improved by around 3.5 this week compared to approx. 10.5 after last weeks 86pt victory.

Correct. Our percentage last week was 269. If we'd kicked a couple at the end we could have surpassed it, but had to be content with 218.

Of course, given our percentage already increased by 10.5 last week, even if we did better, in percentage terms this week (as we almost did), our overall percentage would not have increased by as much as it was coming from a higher base.

Congrats on the win for the boys. Just one of those days where it wasn't as fluent as you'd like into the scoring zone. Those young defenders are just the standout for 2014 season for me though Important win for our season.

Go 'Pies

To kick just 8.13 and get a 3.5 % boost is a great result against a team who came close to knocking off the top team, last round.

considering the round 1 belting from freo our defence has been outstanding. third best to date behind sydney and freo. this is the one area we really needed to improve this year. we'd be leaking like a sieve and particularly during red time.

today was a very solid effort and whilst not pretty one to take to the bank. we drop a game and we're back to the chasing pack.

Percentage won't increase by much given its a low scoring game. If the final score was 6 to 1 (a 600% win), percentage barely goes up. That said, great to win and keep the Dees to just 3 goals.

Better kicking and the margin could have been the deserved 60+

A good ugly win. Great to hold any team to just 3 goals. If the Dees are happy about that they are truly f#cked.

Pros:

Fantastic defensive effort from our young defenders.

Young is slowly finding form.

Ditto Cloke.

Ditto Seedsman.

Grundy showed he can be a great forward target.

We won the hitouts.

Cons:

Fasolo went missing and will probably have to go back to the VFL.

Witts was OK, but might need a rest for a week or so.

There were far too many poor short passes.

Unless I missed something, Ball failed to have an impact when he came on.

Gutsy win against a team determined not to be spanked. Frost and Keefe solid all day and Goldsack is on a mission.

Paul Roos makes his teams play ugly. In saying that you would rather follow them than the tigers.

Great to win as some so called experts predicted Melbourne to win!

A lot of our supporters will find negatives, but here is some positives!

Kept Melbourne to 3 goals!
Despite kicking 8 goals ourselves, we gained 4%

11 touches and 2 clearances. Not bad work for a quarter and a bit Wink.

Yes, larger margins will have a larger impact on overall percentage.

Take the 4 points. But very ugly for three quarters.Second lowest winning score for Pies since 1988 according to Sandy Roberts. Young was very good. No coincidence we switched on when Beams got going. Our defense is superb.

We are 8 and 3 with an easier draw to come and good players to come back in.

Guess what folks, this season looks very much like a rerun of 2010. A mighty good year to pinch a flag. Very Happy

Yes, winning ugly, but tick, and move on. Blair, Fasolo and a few other blokes simply can't afford to have mediocre games like that and expect to automatically keep their spot in the side the following week, with way too many blokes from VFL demanding a game.
Are we done with this starting-Ball-as-the-sub shit, Buckley?
And for those who wish to gloss over the fact that the forward line was a dysfunctional f*cking train-wreck today, blame cockhead Lappin, not Melbourne's pressure.
And to the Clinton Young haters on this site, eat the dick that was fed to you today. He was super reliable, along with Seedy, Harry and the rest of the backline for that matter. Frosty so fearless. No Presti, no Tarrant, no Brown, no Reid, but we have the Snowman.

CD, you also pointed out in GD thread, that it was like watching two teams full of Isreal Falous, which wasn't too far from the truth.
Melbourne's field kicking was actually superior to ours today, and for that matter so were St.kilda for much of the previous round despite the blow-out margin. Collingwood's disposal accuracy needs to lift by 20% to be any chance of upsetting either the Whorkes, Port or Freo, let alone Swans.

I doubt anybody will be piching a flag from the Pink Ducks and their COLA kids. Anyhoo, worry about that, if and when we can secure 4th spot.
But for now, onto Footscray next week.

Melbourne kick 3 goals and "They'd be happy with the effort".

Geezuz, I'm glad I don't support them.

Melbourne's kicking efficiency might have been better than ours-not sure about that. But you're not going to win too many games kicking the ball 20 metres sideways and backwards, which is what they did all day long.

One of the reasons why DE% is not a very useful stat.

The commentators were saying that Roos had improved them.
What he has done is drag teams down to Melbourne levels of shitness

A boring game just glad we got the points and percentage.

Had our disposal into the forward area been better we would have won by 10 + goals.
