Ultimately, the scariest thing I saw during the Trump administration wasn’t a few dozen whackos carrying torches and chanting. It was the brutal, militarised police response to the Black Lives Matter protests. That looked uncannily like fascism in practice. So I suspect the most imminent danger in a US domestic context comes less from malevolent groups below, be they far-right or otherwise, than from the state itself.

But a state sanctioned popularly and controlled by the demagogue is infinitely more dangerous than any old state alone. Call what you saw a precursor and weaponise it with the hurricane of populism. The old cliches simply don't apply.

Well, those forces don't disappear overnight if the demagogue isn't there. Perhaps Biden and subsequent Democratic presidents will keep the sea monster caged, but unless there's some attempt to dismantle those structures then it's ready and waiting in the wings for the next authoritarian to use against the populace.

A huge win to Biden: 306 to the loser Trump’s 232.

The polls were right.

The lawyers acting for Trump have dumped their main actions in relation to voting in Arizona and Pennsylvania. It’s time for Slumpy to give it up.

He won by flipping just 5 states. 4 of them by a total of 104,000 votes.

Arizona, 10,000 votes for 11 EC seats
Georgia 14,000 votes for 16 EC seats
Wisconsin 20,000 votes for 10 EC seats
Pennsylvania 63,000 votes for 20 EC seats.

60,000 people vote the other way and it's Trump winning with 289 EC seats to Biden 249

Every election ever is won in the marginal seats. Round figures, it's 51% to 47% - a very, very clear win.

California really skews the results though. Take them out of it, the other 49 states went 50.2% Biden, 49.8% Trump.

As much as Californians want to think they run the USA, they're only one state.

So?

7 in every 8 people in the USA aren't Californian and voted as I posted above. California is 1 state out of 50. Damn nice state no arguments, beats the shit out of Victoria on every level, but still doesn't run the country.

Your adoration for non-representational voting might make you feel better as someone who identifies with rugged frontier isolationism, but the over-weighting of a maladaptive, religio-authoritarian culture is sinking the US into the abyss of history at a rapid clip.

If you spent longer than five minutes in that dysfunctional ignorance you'd be begging to live elsewhere. It's a culture lost in time, growing increasingly bitter as the world leaves it behind.

Why not just go full-on fascist? You could ban whole swathes of people from voting. You know you want to.

Yeah, if my Auntie had a moustache she’d be my uncle ....

Yada, yada....

306 - 232 = 74. That’s pretty big. The polls tipped he’d win and they were right.

Indeed. It's a system that evolved to present two choices, and given current parameters can only ever throw out this sort of variance. This is about as big a margin as possible; hell, even George W. got two terms.

The sorry thing is that it's locked into this two-party system because the party that loses looks at the numbers and feels it's close to winning again. And both parties are smart enough to see having only one competitor is a pretty good deal. The halfwit narcissist Trump has been deceived by this illusion, much like a fist-waving crowd of Khmer Rouge Hats has him fantasising that everyone loves him and he's actually doing brilliantly.

The US hides its differences in the states, which is fine and normal except that in a hyper-integrated world the differences between the small sparse states and the cultural and economic centres is now unsustainable as encoded in the present electoral college. This is leading to a wrecking of the whole rather than a reckoning with the backward states. This is up there with Ludditism in its level of futile, destructive denial.

I'm not sure if you need to stop taking drugs or start.

I have NFI why you think I have a boner for non representative voting, just pointing out some facts that California isn't representative of the rest of the USA. And I have spent time there and loved it

Predictable, a lefty throwing out the Facist term when beaten by logic when it's actually the left that devalues the votes of those they consider inferior to them.
