Economic Left/Right: 2.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.00

Although i do blame the catastrophic failures of certain notable economic-left nations for my right-leanings on that point. hehe. No point flogging a dead horse.

Just in relation to my earlier posts... I had this thought this morning while vacuuming the kitchen:

To properly combat, argue or debate an ideology, you must first understand it.

http://www.newmatilda.com/2008/02/21/not-so-united-states

Quote:
Consider Obama's pitch: that there is neither liberal America nor conservative America, only a united country. It assumes that a $3-an-hour (plus tips) waitress at the International House of Pancakes in Mobile, Alabama, has something in common with the Wall Street executive, who is earning, on average, 1300 times her wage.

Whether Obama intends it or not, his appeals to national unity only reinforce the socio-economic status quo and undermine his claim to being the candidate of change. They imply that the average working stiff, in a society where the buying power of wages for lower and middle income earners has been declining for more than 30 years, should put aside his or her legitimate grievance for some supposedly lofty purpose.

The spurious notion of unity often demeans those demanding economic fairness - such as unions, consumer rights advocates, non-government organisations and charities - as "special interests" or "sectional interests".

Great article, even though it ends on a crap note. Nixon is NOT worth our respect at all.

Anyway, the point is that trying to achieve consensus with right-wing scumbags like Howard is not desirable, it's restrictive.

vacuuming? Surprised

Omar, I remember hearing a politician say something like the following once (may have been Howard? I forget): "The winners of a democratic election have an onus on not just looking after those who voted them in, but the ones who didn't as well."

I think that may be kind of what Obama is talking about - as well as perhaps preaching the importance of unity as opposed to division. Perhaps, indeed, he:

If he assumed such a thing, he would be dead right. Both those people are human beings, and that's a lot in common right there.

Yeah, but when it comes to making real decisions about the fundamentals; economic policy, those two have NOTHING in common. It may sound nice to say they are both human beings, but that doesn't help us make policies that suit them both; because there are none. They have fundamentally competing interests.
