There would be no rumour or innuendo if there were people who could just mind their own business and leave people to their own business!
I agree with PP here as well...you added the "maybe with another bloke" part which only adds to the rumours and innuendo....I wonder how you will feel if Ian decided to end his own life due to the rumours and innuendo concerning his sexual preferrence and the pressure to announce his feelings being way too much to handle...I suppose you will be claiming a new matyr for the Gay society and will claim that he is a victim of a society that oppresses Gay rights .... It is his business and his business alone.....

Yeah we get it, and nobody really agreed, bolding your words doesn't make your argument more sound. Everybody agrees that it's good that gay people come out and are comfortable about it, but nobody has any obligation to ever speak about their sexual orientation to anybody.
I don't get why you're so adamant that he's gay anyway.

Can sort of see where you are coming from I think Tess, but I think you are badly misreading what people mean by 'none of anyone else's business'.
I wonder if a well-known straight guy in the public eye refused to reveal the name of his new female partner whether or not so many people would make the same argument about it being 'none of anyone's business'? For me I would, but I think there is still a lot of people not particularly comfortable with gays, and that this perhaps feeds into the tendency for many to not want to know about 'anyone's business' where gays are concerned. Is this the kind of outlook you are referring to?
By the same token, there are a lot of people, including myself, that regard sexual preference as no more important than hair colour or whether a person if left or right handed. From this perspective I couldn't give a shit whether his partner is male or female, and if he doesn't want to tell the public it truly is no-one else's business.
Why do we expect all members of oppressed or disadvantaged groups to be poster boys or girls for 'their kind'? It's an unfair and narrow-minded expectation. |
