I like the suggestions of De Goey and Adams. Frost and Langdon, too (why do people never think of defenders?).

Having a defender as captain is like having a fast bowler as captain of your test cricket team. Very rarely successful.... Rolling Eyes

Maxy begs to differ!

"Very rarely successful"................ Cool

Far more forwards/ruckmen/midfielders have captained VFL/AFL teams.

I think that says more about clubs' tendencies to appoint marquee players to the captaincy, who are usually midfielders. Anyway, how do you measure a captain's success once they've been appointed? Most of their performance would only be assessed internally, I'd imagine.

If anything, a defender is often ideal for the role. The same reason goalkeepers are often captains in soccer - a better position to marshal the troops, or whatever.

Why would marshaling the troops from the back line be any better than marshaling them from the forward line?

I dunno. It made sense in my head. Smile

Interestingly, of the 19 club captains (GWS have two), three are forwards - Taylor Walker, Matthew Pavlich and Nick Red - and three are defenders - Phil Davis, Shannon Hurn and Robert Murphy. The rest are midfielders; no ruckmen.

the captaincy is a whole of club thing and not just the two hours we see on gameday. i am surprised by the support adams has. hasn't struck me as someone i could see leading the club.

This is the danger of new phones with autocorrect. Constant vigilance is required. Razz

Yeah, I knew that's what it was. Either that or some club captain had a nickname I was unaware of. Smile
