I always thought he gave away too many free kicks in his early years at Collingwood, but that has certainly changed the last couple of years. But I have a theory with that: I feel that umpires go harsh on new ruckmen, particularly when they are competing against more experienced ones. So the better ones (or ones that will go on to better things) just have to bide their time, work their way up the ruck ladder, and things will turn their way (such as infringing less in the eyes of the umpires, and actually gaining free kicks). I never expected he would reach the elite level he has now...

I for one when I first saw said “This kid will be good” but I undersold him

He is great —tho I had one worry “He don’t take enough marks around the ground “

Boy now he has adressed that he is a champion

He was clumsy. He also gave away too many silly free kicks and didn't take enough marks. Not reasons to trade him off though, his many attributes far outweighed any weakness. Grundy's willingness to improve on those weaknesses and his fierce competitive nature is what sets him apart from other young ruckmen. He's just so determined to keep bettering himself and that's why he'll go down as one of the GOAT.
