Goes the other way doesn’t it - pick #40 will be #42-43rd pick by the time we get there. Not sure it matters too much when you get to the middle of the draft. Difference is at the margin.

To explain, the Lions will need to set a record for points needed to accomodate both their F / S prospects. Ashcroft as Pick one and Fletcher in the teens and that’s around 3500 points required, AFTER discount. The only way you can find that value is to have a significant number of second round or early third round picks in your back pocket on the night of the draft. ( given that Dunkley is also a significant trade and will eat up their first round pick plus plenty more ) You will blow out by two picks when the F / S players names are both called and there maybe a couple free agency compo picks to blow it out further by pick 40 but the Lions will then likely need 7 - 9 selections around mid draft just to match another clubs bid for both Ashcroft and Fletcher. If you allow + 4 picks to blow out and then 7 / 8 picks to come off the table, that potentially leaves a net climb up the draft of 3 or 4 positions.
Pick 36 is worth 500 points, so using just mathematics as an example, that would require the Lions to have 7 x pick 36 ( 500 ) = 3,500 points just to have those points put away. They will obviously have a number of picks either side of 36 on the night but the later the pick, the less points that contribute to the total required. Let’s see how we go on the night but in all likelihood we won’t have kept pick 40 anyway. |
Yeah I get it - didn’t consider that they would be “cashing in” picks which then get cancelled (sort of) which brings us back the other way. They may go into deficit though too which would require less picks to be used up this year and some next year. I take your point however.

Someone remind me how many picks you can use on the night - isn't there a rule that you can only use the number of picks that you have spots on your list or similar? So Brisbane can't use 20 picks worth 175 points each to get to 3500, they need a handful at 500 to 1000? Is that how it works? Does that mean that pick 40 will become pick 37 or 38 then (roughly, 2 picks added for 2 F/S's but 4 or 5 picks used for same?). My brain already hurts!!

Good point. Last year with Daicos, it was pretty much as you suggested. You couldnt use more picks than you have list spots available ( on the primary list I think ) Not sure what happens when a club has two very high F / S selections in the one draft. It hasn’t happened before under these rules. The Lions are going to have be very creative during the trade period. They have to trade for Dunkley and they also want to trade for Gunston so it doesn’t impact the McStay compensation pick. They will be lucky to have a pick in the 2023 draft by the time they finish. They won’t care, Will Ashcroft isn’t far behind Nick as a talent, so they will be pretty hard to knock off for the next year or two. I reckon Devon Robertson goes home ( WA ) and probably another player or two will be traded out just to make space and find a few more points.
Even Wright would have his work cut out bringing that all together. |

| Before you feel too sorry for Brisbane, Ashcroft is an elite talent as you can get (my guess is they’ll be using up all their future draft picks as well to get Dunkley). |

^ Yeh, if we are losing Grundy, he sure as hell better bring it home. I am very pleased over Bobby Hill though, just what the doctor ordered for our forward line, we do need to kick more goals.

You mean Rhan Hooper? He finished up a few years ago, only played 54 games...could get him in the PSD  ..not sure what you see in him?
Hopper on the other hands wants to go to Richmond, and is going to be on pretty big dollars that Collingwood, just doesn't seem to have ...so not sure how you plan the get the deal done 90?
