Wakelin is getting older and older and slower and slower. Thompson flogged him on the lead, Rocca had his hands been better, would have taken three or four easy marks in front of his scone. If Shagger was professional as stipulated in an earlier post, I'm a monkey's uncle.

thought that's why we got rid of Sav....weakest wrists in the business. we realised we had the one (Ant) who could actually take a mark on the first grab and not just the second Laughing Laughing Laughing

Clement averaged in 2005 - 17 touches, 5 marks and 3 tackles a game.
Wakelin averaged in 2005 - 12 touches, 5 marks and 2 tackles a game.

Clement was rarely beaten - Wakelin was beaten a fair bit by his opponent.

How is it that 'Clement doesnt do as much as Wakelin'?

I would imagine that this year we will have a true rotating/floating setup, with Rocca, Tarrant, Fraser, Clokes T & C, Buckley all playing each of the key forward positions at different times each match.

It could be in a way like 1990 small ball lineup that was no longer pointed straight at BT, but allowed Daicos, Brown & McKeown (and others, even Monkey & Manson) freedom to move around within it.

With all those marking targets within 50 we should still be able to be direct, no matter who is lurking where.

Look I like Wakes but he did struggle at times on thompson for pace on saturday. In spite of that his timing of spoils is usually spot on and his courage is unquestionable. I think O'brien, Maxwell or T Cloke are in line as replacements Brent Hall has also put his hand up but was unnoticed.

James Clement is not overrated. He is the best defender in the competition at the moment.

On the other hand, stats are useless when judging defenders. If getting possessions was the key to good defenders then Presti wouldn't even get a run with the Gulls.

Hard work is the key and together Wakes, Presti, Clem, Maxy, Tarks and C1 will blend as an outstanding, hard working unit that will be hard to crack.

Wakelin has never been quick of the Mark though.
It's only now though because he is getting on people are noticing it.
I remember games in 2002 when I was saying , geez wakes is slow off the mark.

Wakelin is a very good footballer, But this is his last year... Unfortunately.

Clement is more classier, But I would take both.
St Blunda were stupid for getting rid of him...

Saturday morning and its a brilliant time for footy and PP was in perfect nick and Wakes got flogged.

Emily, I admire your courage in the defence of the Shagmeister, but seriously, comparing his style of play with Clements is like comparing Fevola to Akermanis....its ridiculous.

Clement is a penetrative kick, an attacker, a person that rebounds 50. Wakelin in his hayday fulfilled this role with St.Blunder, he came to Collingwood though as a key position defender, i.e he takes the first or second best defender.

Now, on Saturday, he was beaten by two forwards that I wouldn't consider to be top 10 forwards in the league. One is a huge mountain with a quick step, the other is quick, talented and often maligned - but by no stretch of the imagination is he top 10 material.

In considering the future of the Collingwood defence, I am comfortable in saying that Presti, Jimmy and Agent 86 are the 3 key defenders, Tarkyn your small defender, Johnno the attacking HBF and Jason Cloke the floater. I honestly don't think that Wakelin (and not just on the basis of Saturday, but on the fact that he is aging and slowing) is not in our best back 6 and additionally is a pinch hitter now off the bench. Should the Malted Milkhouse follow his 'horses for courses' policy, it is highly likely that Wakelin isn't in our best 22.

P.S - This is not slagging a great player, this is being realistic and viewing that 2006 is a year in which we as supporters and as a football club CAN NOT compromise our standards and our goals on the basis of previous history as a footballer.

I agree with you there, Cam.

Our forwards in 2006:

-Alan Didak
-Anthony Rocca
-Blake Caracella
-Brodie Holland
-Brent Hall
-Cameron Cloke
-Chris Egan
-Chris Tarrant
-Dale Thomas
-Danny Nicholls*
-Josh Fraser
-Leon Davis
-Nathan Buckley
-Ryan Cook
-Sean Rusling
-Shannon Cox*
-Travis Cloke
-Tristan Walker.

Not shabby at all, and plenty to rotate through. Very dangerous indeed.

wakelin still has a role in the team. However i do see him getting more bench time in order to allow Maxwell and Cloke take greater roles.
