^^Pies2016: why this year have we become so poor at keeping the ball i50, when last year it was such a strength??

Sorry...just answered my own ridiculous question: lack of i50 pressure is a direct result of our low ground ball gets statistic. The real question is: why have we moved away from the style of game we played last year where there was such an emphasis on winning ground ball contests?

I’m not sure we were that good at inside 50 ground balls last year but when you have five forwards who kicked between 40 and 50 goals each in 2018, you could argue that not much was going to ground in the first place ( four of those players are more “ marking type “ forwards )

Virtually everyone of those top five goal kickers have either stagnated or gone backwards for reasons we are all aware.
Cox has missed footy and certainly isn’t any better than 2018
Hoskin Elliot has missed footy and is playing further up the ground
Stephenson was going ok but the rest is history.
DeGoey is holding his own but not much more.
Thomas is the huge drop off because most of his goals were from ground balls. He’s not even getting to as many contests, let alone kicking goals.
I haven’t included Elliot because he missed so much footy in 2018.

I don’t think we have a particularly good grouping of high pressure ( small ) forwards, anyway. It’s just that when we were marking and converting everything in 2018, we were very rarely exposed in that area.

It’s just a theory, I’m sure there are smarter people than me who will have the answers and happy to share them.

We have virtually ZERO front and centre players, anywhere over the ground.

Apart from Varcoe, NO ONE understands the craft of watching the pack front on and picking off the dropped pill. We have too many see ball get ball players who don’t think their way through a situation.

Beggars belief how poor we are all over the ground at this basic, mandatory part of AFL.

I challenge you to watch long kicks down the line or inside F50 and how little players we have at the fall of the ball (and I guarantee you Hawthorn will have plenty). I then challenge you to watch a few more games this weekend and notice how most, of not all other teams, have a number of players who simply wait for the inevitable drop from a pack and whisk the ball away.

Don't think we can just flick the switch and bounce back, especially against this mob who live to knock us off. How many wins against them since the 2011 PF? One I believe, hardly confidence inducing. I'm hoping like we all are that we will hit back hard and win the Collingwood way with tough competitive, aggressive uncompromising footy but I just don't think we have the cattle to do it nor the desire tbh.

I can see two results:
1. We win a slogfest by <10
2. We get properly smashed by the Hawthorn of old, making last week look like a mercy killing.

Which one I do not know. So, then option #3 must be correct....Pies by 10 goals.

Bucks tells Isaac in front of players “You play your 1st game “

That’s one in—-another could well be Jamie barring he don’t re injure

The road to self belief starts on Friday.

Ok, we stuffed up last week.

But we're second on the ladder. There's a top 4 spot to be taken and a flag to be won. Please win this Collingwood so we can start believing again. We have to go to Perth with something.

Like him, wish he played for us. Hope no one does, we can't afford to lose any more players, the cupboard is very bare.

Reported in the age that he will definitely play friday night.
I have watched him a bit in the VFL and he doesn't look up to the
task yet.
But I hope he proves me wrong.

Happy to see him named.

The fact that we haven't named any debutants this year up until now has been somewhat disappointing so looking forward to seeing what he produces on Friday night.

Very pessimistic, Monco. I think that we will come out with a physical vengeance. The vanilla wafer football we saw last week is totally out of character for our team. Hawthorn don't have a massively impotent forward line to expose the injury ridden weaknesses in our defence. Nor is their midfield a frightening prospect in any sense of the word. Nowhere in fact do they have any really frightening attributes. We are at tipping point with injuries, that is the only concern. I believe we can win this one.

He's still a work in a progress but it's the right move by the coach to bring Quaynor in.

I would have doubled down though and selected Noble also as this side is in desperate need of a freshen up and the inclusion of young players eager to make their mark generally provides a lift even if it's just in the short term.

Out:Reid(inj), Greenwood, Thomas, Varcoe
In:Elliott, Quaynor, Noble, Aish/Crocker

Well done IQ. I look forward immensely to watching him debut.
My guess he is coming instead of Aish (injured, like at least 33.33 % of our team). However, I hope I am wrong, and in fact both Aish and IQ can come in. IQ plays HB and releases Maynard to roam through midfield, and Aish comes in as well to add further flexibility in the back half. At this stage, looks like both Callum Brown and Josh Daicos would make way for Aish and IQ. If Sier is not right to go, then one of Callum Brown and Josh Daicos to stay in the team

What?? How can you drop Greenwood?? And we need Varcoe very much to possibly go down back and allow rotations through HB and the midfield, as well as his pressure in F50.
