We keep forgetting along with Elliott they are 30 years old.
Moore is no spring chicken any more.
Maybe his best days are past besides he missed a fair chunk of his career due to hamstring battles.
Time to pass the batton to Nick Daicos to captain in 2025 and beyond.
Moore as captain was only going to be 2 year thing.

Darcy misses Murph really badly, his partner in crime, and he has not adjusted yet. We must trade hard, for a big backman to support him, Dean is too young yet.

There is a lot of validity in that. In Saturday's game a lot of times the midfielders weren't tracking back fast enough to assist in defence as they should. Not just Degoey and N. Daicos - all of them. Its interesting that when we mounted our comeback in that game then that seemed to change. Its definitely something for McRae to look at I think.

That's in turn likely due to the burden Nick has had to carry sans Pendles and Mitchell and our key forwards, and also Cameron not having Coxy to give him a proper breather.

The defensive side of our midfield was already vulnerable with our style, let alone without known defensive mids and a second ruck (also a mid). Without Nick focusing on moving the ball forward, we'd have struggled even more to kick a score. Jordy is an attacking mid like Nick, but with him and Pendles coming back after long injuries, they will both be short of legs for a bit. So, the deficit was always going to accumulate on the defensive side of midfield.

To blame Nick for trying to drag us over the line by playing his optimal role, a role made even more critical given our makeshift forward line and struggle to kick goals, running like an absolute machine and racking up clearances miles beyond expectations for his age, is utterly absurd. Our list was already thin, and our injuries have hit the defensive side of our game most, messing up our normal defensive model, including both our defensive forward structure and defensive mid structure, leaving Darcy and co. exposed.

It's really not as difficult to analyse as they're pretending to make it. The alternative is something no one mentions because it's out of the question, something Fly has smartly avoided: mess up our entire system by shifting things around radically, losing all edge and style for the pointy end of the year.

Our captain is wearing it the most for the team, something you can bet Fly and the coaching staff haven't missed.

The last few posts align themselves with a point I made earlier in this thread about our mids transitioning between defence and offence. In the last month we’ve assembled a forward line, that at times has looked closer to our VFL forward line than our AFL front six. Over the last four games, our lowest score has been 80 points and we’ve had two scores at 100 +. You can’t achieve those scores with a B grade forward line without a lot help from your midfield.
The coaches would have structured up that the mids will need to play more forward of the ball in order to give us any chance to post a winning score. The problem is in footy, for every action, there’s a reaction and in the midfield case, you simply can’t be in two places at once.
Once we get a forward line back that’s capable of kicking goals in its own right ( add McStay, Elliot, Schultz and maybe Cox ) you can guarantee the line coaches will set up a strategy that incorporates our mids playing with a more defensive mindset.
The other “ ploy “ thats been killing our defence is that we have had absolutely no outlet kick for over a month. We’ve managed well without McStay but once you remove Cox ( albeit not in great form ) and Checkers up the ground, there has been no one to hold a mark as it comes out of our backline. The defence is being put under repeated pressure all to often. Add in Cox, Miochek and McStay back into the mix and our chances of retaining the ball improve dramatically. We focus on defence because they’re getting scores against them but the shortage of quality forwards / talls in the front half has also had a significant impact on the decline of the back line.
Finally, getting behind on the scoreboard so early, has a significant impact in how your mids set up in order to get back into the game. The mids have to push forward in order to contribute on the scoreboard, just to get back into the game. Balanced well drilled transition is what the good teams do well but the exercise becomes so much more difficult to get right when you’re asking your midfield to spend more time in one zone than usual.

Well said.

Our defence has actually been doing remarkably well considering the amount of ball coming in. As the forward line improves, the mids can go back to helping cut off supply. We are still in this season.

In fairness to him he did not concede a lot of goals. Far from his best but took 3 intercept marks and had 8 spoils and he is still the leading spoiler in the AFL this year.

Okay he is no May, Weitering, Taylor, Collins, Ben McKay or Liam Jones. But they wouldn't find it easy in our defence either.

Jezza and I were discussing this at half time, and some nutty old woman grabbed my shoulder butted in and started sounding off about supporters having a crack at Moore! So i said to Jezza "so what do you reckon about Trump!"

was so bizarre, and then when he kicked out straight to a drugster just after half time I really wanted to find Her!

I thought he was a bit better last night, but honestly, if you ever bagged Murphy in the past, time to fess up that YOU WERE WRONG!!!

not helping that we have to keep borrowing players from defence to play forward!
