^ But that was the official excuse, and you can't be so optimistic to think that our government (or a future Australian government) would never pull anything like that.

The more I think about this, the more I think it's crucial that we oppose any such move. Banning political parties, organisations and religious groups should have absolutely no place in a liberal democracy.

An official excuse Rolling Eyes yeah and few individual journalists threaten the Egyptian regime Rolling Eyes

Of course that was the reason. I think you overvalue the role of journalists in world events.

Now could Abbott lock up Miranda Divine - what's not to like Wink

I'm not talking about journalistsit would have been just as (well, almost as) worrying if Greste had been an electrician or carpenter. The point is that it should not be a criminal offence to belong to a political party or organisation.

Yes, if only we only could all sit down with those lovely Muslim Brotherhood chaps & those lovely ISIL people over a cup of tea and cucumber sandwiches. I'm sure it's just a misunderstanding.

Thank you Prime Minister Chamberlain.

These idiots keep pissing off their "own" people.

Quote:
"Your armed forces on Monday carried out focused air strikes in Libya against Daesh camps, places of gathering and training, and weapons depots," the military said in a statement, using the Arabic acronym for IS.

State television showed footage of Egyptian fighter jets it said were taking off to conduct the strikes.

Egypt's leader earlier vowed to punish the "murderers" responsible for the mass beheading.

A visibly angry President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said Egypt "reserves the right to respond in a suitable way and time" in a televised speech, and declared seven days of mourning after the video was distributed by jihadists on social media.

They're nut cases but it's nothing new.

The situation in Egypt and Libya is very concerning especially with political instability and sectarian divides being present in these two countries. Could this be the year the Islamic State truly goes international beyond Syria and Iraq and starts turning its attention toward these two countries? They already control a very small portion of Libya with the seizing of towns of Derna and Nofaliya.

I must admit even though this is an extremely serious situation that I can't help chuckle a little that the Egyptian president's surname spelt backwards is al-Isis instead of al-Sisi! Razz

Now that's a tough one. Maybe Miranda Divine could lock up Abbott instead. Hard to say which one would be the better choice. Can I have a little while to think about it?

It's a long read but a fascinating article nevertheless and a highly recommended read for those interested in understanding this topic further! It's one of the most impressive and thorough articles I've seen about ISIS online since they started to become a big news story in the Western media from June last year.

It definitely ponders a lot of questions about how to stop this rise that has emerged in Syria and Iraq and could spread further into Libya and maybe Egypt potentially.

The article also explores the differences between ISIS and Al-Qaeda and how there internal conflicts between one another has allowed ISIS to grow to be the number one Sunni Jihadist group in the world eclipsing Al-Qaeda who's leadership and support network has declined since Bin-Laden's death. Most jihadists and sympathisers of this cause are more likely to align themselves with ISIS more than Al-Qaeda now demonstrating how this issue has evolved in the past decade or so.

We're all disgusted and outraged by these atrocities, but this kind of Christian fundamentalist anti-Islamic propaganda isn't helping.

Can't stand any religion, IMO all fairytale stuff. But muslims, they're just dangerous. Don't give me the spruik that it's just the extremists , it's far from the religion of peace. I'm supporting the Royal Australian Infidels (supporting our troops)!
