^ Yes, they don't have so many human hangups and perversions. Probably because they almost never wear clothes on the beach.

Most have fur or feathers hiding their bits too! Except baboon arses, now there's a pretty sight!

My next door neighbour, who appears to a member of the said species, thinks that nude baboon swimming is definitely a neglected form of recreation.

On the topic, rationally I agree that David's right and it does not matter, but there is something symbolically important about marking off the erotic space with clothing ; it's a marker of private space and the importance of consent in erotic display, and it seems to be related to the critical human idea of dignity. Some might wish to surrender that - and right that there are places where it can be done - but as a species we are safer and richer if we maintain the idea that sexual display is a special act of consent. Where you draw the line at that is a matter of taste, I admit, but it's somewhere short of common public space.

Tell that to a woman. Almost any woman under 40. If all the crap women dress themselves up in isn't sexual display, I'm a eunuch. Red or reddish lipstick to mimic the blood-engorged lips of sexual arousal (yes, that's where lipstick comes from, look it up); foundation garments to emphasise the breasts; high heels to make the legs look long and sexy, plastic surgery, eye make-up to mimic the dilated pupils of arousal, and so on and on.

Nudity isn't sexual. Only when it is artificially restricted by clothing rules is it seen as a sexual thing.

Compare the hyper-sexual beaches of Brazil (when clothing is required) with the relaxed and family-friendly beaches of Europe, where no-one thinks anything of nudity and sexuality doesn't come into it.

Different meanings of sexual, I suspect. I was referring to the act, you were using it in reference to the courtship process. The act requires consent - the courtship process is actually invitational. More than a few misunderstandings have probably arisen from that. My point is just that symbolic systems play a huge role in human social life, and the symbolic power of concealing sex organs (which arguably include the female nipple) is a way of marking that boundary beyond which particular consent is required. I think there are more risks in blurring that boundary than might at first appear.

^ Out of curiosity, how could the female nipple possibly be considered a sexual organ, except in the context of our hyper-fetishistic society?

I think you make some interesting points re: marking out space. But as Tannin says, nudity is not sexual unless it is sexualised. I do not think that a more relaxed approach to social nudity will weaken our concept of consent; indeed, we can look at certain countries in Europe right now and see if it has had that effect—I'm guessing it hasn't. And of course then there are all the hunter-gatherer societies which seem to have negotiated this distinction reasonably competently for millennia.

On your first point, I can't believe that a modern man like yourself is unaware that they, erm, play a particularly strong role in female sexual response.

On the second, well, I confess i've not looked at the Eu experience scientifically, but I've been on many EU beaches and most are not optional when it comes to being fabric-free ! i'm certainly not arguing that it'd cause an outbreak of rape, just that it marks a sexual limit which is part of the mystique and power of sex itself, as well as part of the concept of self-reservation that underpins the idea of dignity.
