Allan Jeans once said that if you could hold the opposition team to 10 goals, then they's be easier to beat. Adelaide kicked 10 goals against us but we couldn't beat them.
Tom Hafey once said that he wouldn't care if the opposition team kicked 19 goals, so long as his team kicked 20.
When did our team last kick 20 goals?
Ok, those statements are from different eras but is our team putting too much into defence at the expense of attack?
I know there are threads about Karnezis and Martin. I'd like to see one or both in the side, or maybe play Fasolo in attack.
We have no real crumbers and we have no forwards with that real X factor.
Blair, Ball and Goldsack are good players and they've been warriors for us, but having them all in the side at the same time makes us a dour side that's hard to score against but is unlikely to kick its own high score.
Freo is a defensive side, but they still have Fyfe and Ballantyne.
Geelong has Motlop and Steve Johnson.
Port has Wingard, Westhoff and Gray.
Cloke is out of form. That's ok, he's a champion and will get the magic back.
Our midfielders kick goals and Jamie Elliott is a gun, but we need some X factor goalkickers in the forward line.
Thoughts?

I think we need to see how some of the kids develop over the next year or 2. Broomhead in particular looks a very classy footballer. Just needs to get a decent run at it with injuries and force his way into the seniors.

I still think Fasolo will return forward over time and become the class and unpredictablilty we need. Brad Dick was a bigger loss than we think our last genuine crumber alongside Krak and Leon.

Reid is the missing link up forward. When he returns it will release pressure off Cloke, White and create more opportunities for Elliott and maybe Fasolo.

The most accurate kick we have in front of goal is Jamie Elliott. He will be an absolute star. Its would be nice to make him a more rounded player by playing him in the midfield but what we desperately need are goals - you know the things that determine who wins the game and are worth 6 points each.

When considering our conversion rate he needs to play predominantly in the forward line. He is a terrific overhead mark, plays tall and has reasonable crumbing skills.

Having Jesse White spend more time close to or in the forward 50 would also be a real asset.

The OP is absolutely correct and I was going to bring up the same topic myself sometime today.

Nathan must be very wary he doesn't end up making the coaching mistake of playing to many "good blokes" the players who always follow the coaches instructions to the letter and end up becoming a favourite of theres.

Don't get me wrong you want players who aren't one way passengers and are committed to the cause but if you get the balance wrong and end up with to many "good blokes average players" then your side will suffer.

Before Anzac Day 2010 I made a post on here pleading for Malthouse to include all of Reid, Brown and Dawes as I felt the side needed an injection of youth that represented the future as well as a team that needed key structural changes to improve in the short term.

He obliged Wink and the rest as they say is history.

I believe that time has arrived again and while it can be a mistake to make reactionary changes after just the one loss I have felt for a number of weeks now that our side is lacking creative flair and especially avenues to goal.

It's our major weakness now IMO and unless we make some hard calls on good average types or champions past there best then we wont close the gap on the best and you can kiss goodbye any hope of a flag this season.

Time for change is now Bucks.

Just like 2010 I feel it in my waters. Razz

Don't disagree Swoop, just worried that the next generation are all returning from injuries. Players like Broomhead, Scharenberg, and Freeman I'm particularly bullish about but Broomhead is the only 1 of the 3 staking a claim in the VFL after returning from injury. Oxley is another who excites but hasn't played a game thus far, may return to the VFL next week. Seedsman is just finding fitness after injury. Sinclair returned to the VFL last week and played about 2 quarters. Karnezis could be boom or bust but again, he's just starting to recapture fitness after missing all the preseason and the early games. I think we will see change, but it'll be phased in over the remainder of this season, we just need to be patient.
