With the spotlight on the AFL Hall of Fame tonight, couldn't help but cast my eye over a couple of "legends' who IMHO have been elevated far above their station. Particularly when one of Collingwood's favourite sons in Bob Rose have not been.
In particular I still shake my head every time I see Roy Cazaly listed as one of the 25 pre-eminent footballers to have ever played the game. Two best and fairests in 198 games over 16 seasons and a crap coaching record. Methinks he owes an awful lot to Mike Brady for his 1977 number one hit.
Now look at Rose's record. Four best and fairests in 152 games (when Collingwood was a power in the 1950s), leading goal kicker, Brownlow runner-up, All Australian, four times named in the Sports Life Team of the Year and has the AFLPA Most Courageous Award named after him. Without doubt the unluckiest coach in VFL/AFL history with three grand final losses by a combined 15 points. And without doubt the epitome of nature's gentleman (unlike that loud mouthed, bigoted dips hit Whitten).
On SEN tonight I heard Finey postulating he had another 12 months to get Michael Tuck elevated to legend status. Good footballer, but not fit to wipe Rose's boots as far as I'm concerned.
C'mon Ed, let's start a campaign to get Rose where he belongs and have another of our favourite sons in the pantheon where he belongs. _________________ Explain it to me like I'm a four year old. Ted Whitten is an AFL legend, and Bob Rose isn't? |

Good to see Andrew McLeod added to the hall of fame. Brilliant player, one of the best I have ever seen - and, best of all, he helped keep the 'Aints' premiership drought going in an era when the 'Pies weren't up to the task. |

Still Carey not a legend. The best of all time never won a Brownlow because the umpires hated him and now can't get 'legend' status because he was a bit of a douchebag. This whole thing is kind of messed up. |

Honestly, I'd agree with you if it mattered, but this hall of fame thing is all a bit of a wank really. Carey was a great player and everyone knows it whether the AFL decide to 'recognise' him or not. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Says more about the selection committee, obviously a bunch of yes men, I'm finding it more and more difficult to take our comp seriously.
Joel Bowden on the MRP, JOEL BOWDEN!! Poster boy for bruise free football, seconded only by the softest player of all time and his long term team mate and current umpires boss Wayne Campbell.
No wonder our games going to shit.
No shit, I can recall many time when Campbell was captain of the tiges and jibbed contests like a first game player, what always pissed me off is the commentators would rave on about his courage lol, he is without doubt the softest experienced footballer I have ever seen.
Knights wasn't far behind him either, and Bowden was a squib of epic proportions, 2 of that 3 now have a say in how our game is played, the other was made a head coach lol.
Get those bibs ready boys. _________________ Defender...........

Players are precluded from Legend Status currently as membership is capped at 10% of the overall HOF. Apparently it is full right now.
Rose will get his chance. Agree that Ed should mount a campaign. _________________ One team, one dream - the Pies and this year's premiership |

Oh man!! Absolutely word-for-word my thoughts on Bowden, Knights, Campbell.
Well revered at their club, but 3 of the absolute softest footballers I've ever seen; and everyone wonders why Richmond's been a basket case for 30 years!! _________________ "I am a great sage, equal of heaven.

As much as I'd love it to happen, there is zero chance. Unless they give it to him for his time at Footscray.
Our next legend will probably be Darcy Moore, or maybe his son. _________________ I hold a cup of wisdom, but there is nothing within. |

I think I'm with them. Sure he was a very good player, possibly the best in the game at his peak. That peak didn't last very long and he wasn't the most consistent going 'round. The Hall of Fame is also more about what a player achieved, not just how good they were. I don't think Kouta's achievements were that extraordinary. I'd have to look at who else is there to decide whether I should be seriously outraged.
Based on ability though, Brad Johnson's the one who I don't think would be there. A good player, but not a great one. Deserves his spot in the Hall of Fame because he played a lot of games and won Best and Fairests at a pretty ordinary club.
And still no Carey? Not a great bloke, but a great footballer. His off-field issues weren't that serious. Done his penance I would have thought. There was an article in The Age today about Cousins not getting in, but Carey's the bigger omission, Cousins was always going to have a significant wait. _________________ Well done boys! |

Carey would be a major omission if not for his induction in 2010...
Johnson was a six time all Australian, that's a reasonable pedigree for Hall of Fame I would have thought. Much better than Kouta's record (2 times). |
