| Post subject: Is Marley Williams our Hodge |  |
|
Sorry mods I couldn't find he Marley thread didn't know if had been moved so started this one.
I've watchd with interest Marley play the past couple weeks after he commenced after the court case.
I was expecting him to be a bit behind fitness wise and take some time to get the feel for the game again.
I've been pleasantly surprised at how quick he seems to have come up to speed.
Whilst I'm not saying he has been BOG or killing it each week he has definitely added a new dimension to our back line.
Tonight against the Dee's I watched in awe a few times when he picked it up hand balled then followed it up to get another touch and hit a target down field with an impeccable left boot.
I stopped and wondered is he turning into our Hodge ?
Left foot linking running backman who can swing into the middle.
I know he has a lot of improving left in him but week in week out he is getting better and if he continues he could be our xfactor moving forward.
Love the work of him and Seedy linking a couple times the past 2 weeks.
We seem to have a combination in the making which can deliver glory in coming years. |

| Agree is some regards DTM but he has a huge upside and is only improving. His skills are still a work in progress but I see playing the Hodge role for us down the track |

Hodge? 
Might be going a bit far with that comparison. I thought he played his best game of the year today, and he was pretty good against the Saints. Prior to that his ball use had been ordinary and he was probably not playing tight enough on his man. Nothing extraordinary or Hodge-like just yet. He is a tough player and does always seem to have time with the ball, however his ball use does not always reflect this, possibly because he sometimes tries to do too much.
He's still a developing player who is just now carving out a spot in defense and cementing his spot in the side. Definitely earning that spot at the moment but there will be plenty of competition down the track for half back flankers so he will need to continue to learn and improve. The surprising emergence of Langdon, who I'd have ahead of Marley at this stage, just adds to that competition,

Marley and Langdon are super efficient with their ball use, never panic and cool headed in heavy traffic. Seedsman heading down the same track as he gets more game time under his belt post his operation, and with even more attacking flair. These three along with Frosty and Keefe could end up playing 200 games together. What an understanding they'll develop together. And what tight unit they'll become.
Think Scarlett, enright, Corey, Kelly and Mackie etc at Geelong.
As Bucks said tonight on Footy Classified: they are the future of the club but they're delivering NOW.

i would like to reinforce this post because in a lot of ways it explains why we are poutperforming expectations this year!
Jack Frost, in my opinion, has become one of the best key position ackmen in the GAME! His closing speed is unbelievable. the way he can get a hand into a contest where normally you would say "nothing the backman could have done about that!" is quite extraordinary. Throw in that he tackles like Goldsack and runs very well and is poised and balanced just makes him the complete package. someone with time might list his scalps in 2014! I'm sure its an impressive list.
Langdon is exactly as Damian desribes. A cool head in a young body. always seems to take the right option, but more importantly, has excellent hands which gives him more time than most to weigh his options.
Keefe is one i'm not 100% sold on yet, but for only one reason. when he gets beaten a couple of times, he is prone to severe issues with his confidence. This means that when he is playing well, he is brilliant, but it makes him vulnerable under severe pressure (which is what he is going to face come finals time against the top teams). Mind you, these are issues most young kids tend to have to deal with (we are just lucky that Langdon and Frost dont seem to fit into that category).
Finally, i love the idea that in Marley Williams we have a player that everyone in the league knows is capable of inflicting grievous bodily harm. He is the modern day Stan Magro!
Seedsman, Young and Harry L are the linebreakers!
What a great defensive unit, providing a great springboard to attack!
Bravo Nathan! i must confess, i did not expect this group of players to be as good as they are individually!
Now the real question is - is it nurture or nature??
i say its nurture. and to reinforce the point, i'd like to mention something
Derek Hine said to my dad a few months ago about Patrick Karnezis. he said that the pies are treating him basically as a first year player because absolutely no development was put into the kid in his time at brisbane. Now i'm not sure what that means, but i wonder why the good football teams seem to get so much out of their kids whereas others do not. are the teams picking the wrong players or is it more the case, which i would argue, that these 17 and 18 year old playters arent being developed to their full potential by their clubs?????

Donny I didn't mean he was a player like hodge.
What I meant but didn't state correctly is IMO Marley could be our hodge in terms of having the vision to see up the ground and create. He could also swing into the midfield if required and sneak forward to kick the odd goal.
With Maxy closer to the end than the beginning and a young backline having someone versatile like Williams gives us a dimension.
If you look at the likes of hodge and enright or Kelly they offer more than being than a defensive specialist.
I think he and Seedy can create for us off the back line and break through the middle.
I agree he has a lot of work to do but the past 2 weeks I watched him move so smoothly when under the pump sell off and dummy swing to his left and hit a target.
To me all positive signs. |

I think if I had to compare his game to anyones it would be Guy McKenna in his early days.

Hodge is great overhead in both Marking and Spoiling. He reads the flight of the footy exceptionally well and attacks it in the air aggressively when required.
Marley does not do this and nor should he, its not his job.
Langdon for me is the potential Hodge type - needs more aggression though.
I think though Marley's disposal has been the one thing he as probably lacked conditioning in while laid off. He can find the footy and creates fantastic run however until yesterday his timing of his disposal has been a little off.
Yesterday though it looked like he had taken a huge step. His kicking was very good and in the context of that game really imortant
