From yesterday's game.
Centre clearances -3 (13-16)
Around the ground stoppages -14 (21-35)
So we did ok in the centre clearances but were smashed around the ground, it's gotta be a big concern for Bucks, especially considering we played 3 pure inside mids. _________________ Defender...........

Been the same the 2 weeks prior as well, we're beaten by both Melbourne and the Saints at around the ground clearances.
Against the saints we broke even at centre square clearance and were down 5 around the ground.
We actually broke even with the Dees around the ground and were down 4 at centre clearances. _________________ Defender...........

Well Adams did his bit, collecting a record 21 contested possessions and 30 overall. The fault surely lies with players like Blair and Ball who went missing. |

Perhaps the problem lies in part with our young ruckman? _________________ He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD! |

We hardly ever win the clearances and should be playing to our strengths - outside run and spread. And thats why playing 3 inside mids is a folly. |

Especially against the Dogs. They win the clearances against most teams but it doesn't matter, they don't have the outside run or the offensive power to take advantage of it. Against someone like the Hawks, the clearances are far more important.
What we did on Sunday was make our team more like theirs, too many slow inside mids. It was definitely a mistake.
On the clearances: young rucks definitely has something to do with it. They're not smart enough about clearing space for our mids at this stage. Jolly was an expert at this, and it's the main reason we became a premiership chance in 2010. It's not about hit outs but footy smarts. _________________ Well done boys! |

Maybe, they get a jump at it in the centre clearances, around the ground they seem to get overpowered by the more seasoned guys. _________________ Defender...........

Body strength is definitely more important at around the ground ball ups and throw ins than the centre square. _________________ Well done boys! |

Disagree with that.
It's not only the stoppages we struggled with at the weekend, winning ground level ball off a marking contest, a crumb, was a massive concern as well. _________________ "I am a great sage, equal of heaven.

Think this is a real concern and must look at a combination of contributing factors to analyze. Young Ruckman, below best form of players like Ball and Swan. Missing Beams would have contributed last week. Having a pure tagger at the stoppages might also play a small part.
We really do need some zip and pace at the stoppage from players that can also get inside and get their own footy, Kennedy and Freeman were drafted for this. Hope Kennedy gets a game this week. |

Apparently Freeman is very close to playing but will need the VFL for at least 2 weeks. |

We lost the hitouts 45-42 on the weekend.
Our ruck department used to be simple - automatically lose the hitout, midfielders shark the crumb.
Now it's a case of winning the hitout but a) our mids are simply in the wrong spot (set up defensively for a loss) or b) Grundy/Witts are hitting it in the wrong spot.
Both Witts/Grundy will get better. We can't under estimate the value of Beams at stoppages around the ground. What we would give for Dangerfield! |

Opposition working harder to get to the contest.. being outnumbered simple. |

Pretty damning if that's the reason. _________________ Defender...........

It is I agree, limited numbers at the center sqaure (though players do come off the lines hard to make a contest in the center) around the ground though we are 4x less likely to win the stoppage..and that means we are either getting outworked or our structures and method are dog $h!t. |
