Understood. It was the "especially our backs" bit that I was contesting.

Brown's our best tall defender and we have a number of first choice (or close to) smaller defenders out of the side. We're also missing our second best tall defender in Reid.

In terms of defense we couldn't realistically be much more short handed than we are. Given that, we are coping remarkably well.

Agree. Backs are thin and many first choice players. We currently have Faz down there, who would be 3rd or 4th choice. And depth wise we have shown some quality coming through and not been exposed.

But majority of our A graders are still playing. No side copes losing a batch of their top liners.

I guess my point is that the injuries haven't been to our A graders (other than Reid). Just our back line and fringe players.

No doubt we haven't been lucky in terms of injury numbers. But lucky in terms of talent missing.

Imagine, instead of Brown, Sinclair, Seedsman & William, we were missing Pendles, Beams, Cloke, & Swan.

Any team would struggle under the same circumstances.

Take out Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis and Roughead and see how Hawthorn go for the next couple of months.

I never thought the round one performance was that bad.

I mean, yeah ok, it WAS bad, but it wasn't as bad as the score indicated. The main reason the scoreboard was so bad was because of three sequences where we missed an easy shot at goal and then Freo sliced up our atrocious kick in zones and got a goal. That's three 11 point turnarounds which is 33 points. That's almost half the margin right there! It's no surprise we've looked much better once we've fixed that up, although we're still kicking way too many points.

Is anyone else excited that we're currently 6th on the ladder? And percentage off 4th?

With all the doom and gloom talk up until recently, one could be forgiven for assuming that we were last (still)!!

This week is really important, with most of the teams around us likely to win which shows how close it is in the middle section still, but I'm still impressed that with our young team and injuries and difficult draw we are there or there abouts. We were always going to improve during the year (nature of players returning from injury / building match fitness and kids getting experience) but it looks like we'll be building from a much better platform than I thought!

GO PIES!

Quietly happy is more how I would categorise it.

Still going to take it one week at a time, but the thought of possibly going into the bye at 5-2 is an admittedly juicy one.

And to think that but for 2 goals more against Geelong we'd be sitting 4th right now... Shocked

Remember that mob that pummelled us in Round 1 ?

Well, they're 7th. and we're 4th. (5th. at worst, if West Coast beats Carlton) - 5 games later.

I don't think anyone would have realistically predicted us to be above Fremantle after round 6. Hard to believe after what happened in the opening game of the season.

It's a testament to the club in the way they've responded since the disappointment of the opening match of the season.

I'm happy to be 5th if that means the eagles beat the scum.

Actually it's quite funny.
Over here in WA after round 1 they seriously and I mean seriously predicted an eagles freo grand final. I love living in WA when one or both of these sides lose. Man I'm a happy camper tonight. Time for another bourbon.
Cheers all

you almost want the flogs from pricefixer park to beat them so it creates a one game gap between fourth and fifth. a bit like your mother in law driving off a cliff in your new car.
