For me following the Pies is not about calm, rational, objective analysis. I leave that for TV commentators or sports journalists....or perhaps for coaches.

For me it's about loyalty, passion and unbridled pure emotion. That's how I roll. For the record, I still think we can win the flag this year.Wink

Me too, maybe slightly more objectively than your good self. People say we're developing which is true and that our window for GF success is more likely 2015/16 which is also true. BUT I counter with 2010. In all reality our window was more likely 2011/12 with the squad we were developing BUT the planets aligned and it fell our way. Anything can happen and we're only at the half way mark of a marathon.

I think you are talking about one person's reality compared with another person's hope.
I for one HOPE we can win the flag this year but in reality, it seems we are a year or two away from peaking as a great team. Rolling Eyes

To win a flag, which are damn hard to win at the best of times, you need your absolute best team on the paddock, from the beginning of August on, at least. Yet again,we have been blighted by key injuries, both Brown and Reid are massive losses, yes young Frost has done very well, but the kid maybe starting to tire a bit now, hes very young, and gets the gun player from the other team every week. Maxy is a bit iffy now with injury, we just seem to get one guy back, and someone else goes, usually a key player. Losing last sunday was a disaster, top four is now very hard to get for us, I think we could end up around sixth, fifth if we are lucky. Which might not be so bad, to avoid an interstate final against the swans or port say. We need a fully fit, uninjured team to win the flag, and have everything go our way. I reckon 2016-19 I our big chance to grab a premiership, when all our young guns really peak. Surprised

I think we are a couple of years away from a fierce flag tilt. But as a pie supporter I'm lucky to still watch us play finals most years.

I agree. Been saying that all year Piesnchess! However that doesn't mean we can’t win one before then.... Rolling Eyes

But for that to happen, all the planets will have to align and all the rested players must be back for the last 3-4 rounds this season. We need a large amount of good fortune too.

I want us to win every week and win the GF every year
I know this is unrealistic but I still want it to happen

I accept reality will always defeat my wants

I look forward to watching a side develop towards the capacity to win every week

Just in time for GC's and GWS's domination and Cloke and Pendles being on the wane....

I reckon we won't be winning any flags in the near future if we don't pinch one by 2017.

This past loss has had me thinking that there is a big difference between the expectations of many against the reality of where we are actually at.

So below I'll list some real big myths that appear at the moment

1- Collingwood to win premiership in 2014

Expectation is we should win one every couple years

Reality is we off loaded in the past 2yrs 1000 games of experience and last week had another 700 games of experience on the wide line. Take 1700 games out of the hawks swans Geelong and see where there situated

2- We should smash every side out of the 8 by 100 or more

Expectation that we have the fire power to murder sides out of the 8 each week we play them

Reality our forward line structure this year (preseason) was to play Cloke, White & Reid forward. 12 rounds in and we still haven't had them on the field together. Cloke's form has been down but last 2 weeks started to look better. But with no other tall marking target (all due respect to Elliot who has done well) we are one dimensional.

3- Pressure and squeeze the life out of sides

Expectation is we can do this every week

Reality is that is a very hard game plan and when you throw into the mix how young our side has been most weeks it gets harder. Not having brown and Maxy in our back line week in week out has hurt. Frosty and Langdon have done a great job and in years to come these games now will pay off big time for us. Marley had a late start to the year and is still playing catch up. Forward pressure has been stop start I think not having Goldy there hurts as he adds that extra. Blair has been quiet most of the year and his major job is to pressure in the forward line has been limp

Look it's hard to sit on the weekend and watch us play below our ability.
Since the bye we have been down on our pre bye form.
Yes we have won 2 games but when the acid was put on us we looked tired and had no run
Simply if we had Maxy and Brown last weekend we win. Jones wouldn't get near it like he did
Reid forward taking pressure off Cloke and we are a better side by 3 or 4 goals easy
Missing Beamer and Sidey last week hurt us deeply. Add Swanny lack of form this year and our output has been down. Pendles and Beamer have been carrying the mid field all year. Ball looks at the end, Adams is still learning slowly, Thomas is getting there slowly as well.
Simple fact is Witts, Grundy, Langdon, Frost, Adams, Thomas, Seedsman, Williams are all in the first full year in the AFL. None have played 20 games yet. 2yrs time this experience will pay off but at the moment there kids playing in a side that has had experienced players out injured so they have been under pressure from day 1

All isn't lost far from it actually we are 8-4 even by my lower standards I see us wining another 6 games and making the 8 in around 5th or 6th. Not a bad effort for a developing side getting games into young players IMO

I for one dont have a problem with that RB as long as you don't blame the club, coach, players, weather, umpires, media, Nick's, boot studder, the shooter from the grassy noll and the trainers for the inevitable losses during the season!! Accept it as a loss and move on.
It' this non stop blaming, sooking, whinging and whining after a loss that pisses off most of the reality based posters who try and caution against silly arrogance. Rolling Eyes

Very Happy Now I am somewhere between all of these three posters. My Pie supporter soul resembles that of Rudeboy and Lazza, but then when I sit down and thing about it (After being emotionally involved) qldmagpie67 couldn't have summarised our real state of the current side. The best quote is " 3- Pressure and squeeze the life out of sides, expectation is we can do this every week reality no side can do it all year round!
I hate to see us lose! Now what ever we put on the field on saturday night I hope we keep some for the 150th of the scum! If there is one game I want us to win...... no prizes for guessing!!!

Rudeboy think your loyalty is fantastic and I would never deny you your passion I'm just a different sort of supporter who has less ambitious objectives. But I hope you are right and I am wrong that's for sure

Great post Oldmaggie, I too don't think we can win this year but.... I am still hoping just like I do every year.

If
1. Swan can get over the injury that I believe he has
2. We get Reid back
3. Maxwell can keep playing well
4. This one is more hope than reality, we get Scharenberg and Freeman actually on the oval
5. An this one is the one that is the most problematic, we get a marked improvement from Grundy and/or Witts, both in the ruck and forward line.

IF.. IF.. these things happened then I am hoping against the odds that we could still do something special this year.

As for the future, get as many games as possible into our kids, add Sharenberg, Freeman, Moore and possibly a gun recruit and the future is very bright.

IF is the biggest word at the moment.
What has interested me of late if the problematic opinion of some on here. One week they of the "we are world beaters and premiership material" next week is "we are doomed"
It's the syndrome of having a young list simple as that. They will have good weeks and bad weeks. At the moment we have to many experienced players either missing or playing below there best ie Swanny Blair, White, Maxy, Reid, Brown, Sidey, Goldy
When we lose over 1000 games in experience then have another 700 games sitting on the side lines to be 8-4 isn't a bad place really.
As you said getting games into Langdon, Frost, Adams, Thomas, Dwyer, Seedsman, Witts, Grundy & Williams will pay dividends in the coming years.
As for Scharenberg and freeman can't wait to see them hit the paddock. If they are as good as recruits as Hines recent picks are then we will be blessed.

However, in 1993, against all expectations, a very young Essendon outfit, won or rather, pinched, a very unlikely flag, against a very experienced Bluebellie outfit, so it is possible, for a very young team to go all the way. Then again, I might see elvis in my local Maccas next week too, so who knows. ?

You are spot on Piesnchess mate, anything can happen in the finals BUT to give us the best chance of achieving the unlikely, we need to make top four I think. THAT is why this loss might hurt more than others, if we miss out on the top four by 4 points.
History shows we can do it, in reality we need to take the "wait and see" approach. Long way to go yet, its only the half way mark of the season.
