Was just reading a story on The Age about the verdict. Accompanying it was a photo of the incident at the precise moment the Crows player was sandwiched between the two Demons players and I couldn't help but think... a bit like the injuries to lower limb and the farcical rule that was introduced there ... how often will we see a player sandwiched between two players who also gets a broken jaw or even a hit to the head?

Grandstand all you want... we might be unlucky enough to see an incident like this once every 3-4 years or even less.

The thing that has been lost in all the hysteria is that the tribunal actually made the right decision last night.

The problem is with the rule, even Andy D stated today that the rule will be changed soon, just like it was after Lindsay Thomas smashed Ben Reid last year.

It's Demetriou's last legacy that the tribunal has to suspend a player for doing nothing other than what every play is taught to do.

What was he supposed to do? Run past the pack? NO, he would have been dropped the next week for what most consider a cowardly non football act.

It's a dumb rule that must be changed
It's dumb because two incidents might involve exactly the same action but they only act on one when there is an injury.
It wouldn't have rated a mention if the Adelaide boy's jaw wasn't broken.
Accidents happen and that's what this was.
I shudder when I think of the same outcome for us if something like this happened with one of our boys prior to the finals?

Sorry mate. Disagree. The AFL has systematically stripped our great game to a shadow of its former self.
If the bump is taken out what's next? Capping the amount of hand passes or kicks in a game. Maybe even let's stop sledging or the odd jumper punch just before bounce down. The game is being dismantled. Let's not completely f**k it up.

Good result, yes. End of story, No!

The AFL needs to come out and make the original and subsequent finding clear. If that means accepting that they got it wrong, then they need to be big enough to do that.

Are there too many grey areas? Of course there are, and do the players, coaches, umpires and administrators struggle because of it? If nothing else this case shows that.

I think there needs to be a push for at least a two year (probably three) moratorium on rule changes, we don't need knee jerk reactions, the AFL needs consistency.

A consistency that would come from a moratorium would be the understanding of the players and umpires on what the rules are, and the application on the findings passed to the MRP and tribunal to establish the context and spirit of the rules that we have.

No change means we don't have to try and understand what the rules mean this week or next, or what it becomes next year.

Lets get back to basics, and the rules ARE the basics of the game, but if they change all the time, everyone including the fans and supporters, who are the lifeblood of our great game, become frustrated, and that situation festers and becomes disillusionment, and then they turn away.

Is this a win for common sense, no. It should never have happened in the first place.

Is the reaction to this a sign of frustration from all of those that love the game and have some fears for it's future?
