You're joking! Only 61 yo. Thommo was a legend, very sad indeed. Revolutionised the way ruckmen play. Think Fraser / Moore ,but way ahead of his time.
Condolences to his family. The Collingwood family in general will rally I'm sure. What did he die from? Was he ill?
Do it for Thommo on Friday boys! _________________ Enjoy yourself. Its later than you think! |

A true Collingwood champion, was no better ruckman going around when Len was at his best.
Fond memories of watching him towel up ruckman after ruckman, week after week at Victoria Park and the suburban VFL grounds. Used to regularly take the big scalps of Moss, Dempsey, Diterich, Nicholls, Scott et al. |

Quote: | A Brownlow medallist, All-Australian, and all round great player, it seems obvious that Len Thompson was destined to become a great player, given his miracle introduction into first class football.
Thompson had a confusing start to his career, walking home after one training session at Essendon without an idea of where he stood, let alone if the Bombers knew he actually turned up.
Born in Reservoir, Thompson took Essendon’s indifference as a sign to look elsewhere, but Victoria Park had already spotted the talent from a mile away, signing him up in 1964.
A year later and Collingwood is entrenched in finals fever. Their form throughout September fell flat and had no tall timber fighting for the centre bounce, losing three ruckman to injuries after their one-point semi final loss to St Kilda. One of those causalities was Ray Gabelich, and Thompson accidentally had a hand in ‘Gabbo’s’ demise. The two were competing in a heated ruck contest when the former captain broke his ankle when trying to bust through the gifted youth.
In his book The Other Side of The Medal, Thompson said that he instantly felt the worst.
‘’I felt terrible,’’ Thompson said. ‘’Everyone was looking at me – this upstart who had put ‘Gabbo’ out of the finals! I was worried people were thinking I had done something dirty; that I had injured ‘Gabbo’ deliberately.’’
Collingwood, under the power of the revered but unlucky coach Bob Rose, was without a man to place in the pivotal role of first ruck.
Thompson was facing charges for striking in the reserves, but all of Collingwood’s hopes suddenly rested on a rookie getting away with a reprimand.
Rose gave the eighteen-year-old, lanky but lacking self-belief in his skills, a chance in the one thing that mattered to him the most. While most debutants run into home and away matches that are forgotten a week, let alone a year later, Thompson was playing his first match in a preliminary final.
A match away from the last day in September, the last test before reaching eternal glory.
Thompson was given his chance in one of the biggest games of the 1965 season. Strangely enough, that match was against Essendon. Playing in front of 95,000 screaming fans, the match was a tough and gritty contest.
Thompson had an admirable debut, and despite the Magpies falling on their sword to Essendon to the tune of 55 points, the match will always be remembered as the birthplace of a legend.
A premiership would always elude him, but his feats as a five-time Copeland trophy winner, Brownlow Medallist in 1972, and captain of his club and state will stand the test of time. A Thompson’s performance were crafted from smarts as well as skill, and he was named captain at Collingwood in 1978, of Victoria in the same year and in 1974.
Thompson was also a quality ground player, able to deftly pick up the ball despite his height. A frightening force in the ruck, he also held a great amount of speed and manoeuvrability to move quickly around the ground. All – Australian selectors managed to find Thompson a spot in their squad in 1972.
Inducted in the AFL Hall of Fame and Collingwood’s Team of the Century, Thompson has had an illustrious media career after football. He now enjoys looking after a vibrant communications company and six children that are worth more than a hundred Brownlow medals.
