Nick's is to be moved onto a new server tonight (another all-nighter ).

Any posts from this time onward until the site is settled on the new server may disappear completely and forever.

Please don't post unless you really have to - delay it until tomorrow.

If the site is inaccessable over the next twenty-four hours, try refreshing ...and if that doesn't work go away and come back a bit later. I hope that I can do this with a minimum of fuss and interruption (fingers crossed).

OK - everything back to normal now.

You'll find things a little slower for a little while until your computer gets the images re-cached from the new server.

There are bound to be a few problems and I'd appreciate hearing about them, however small.

To bed!

We appreciate all your efforts Mike.
Do you actually spend much time away from Nick's?
Only problem I can see is I had to type my user name and password in to post. (May be unrelated.)

Depends on who you ask stik

The username and password are held in cookies which were set by the old server and are not recognised by the new one. So everyone will have to type in username and password until their new cookie is set.

If, after you've logged in a couple of times, your computer still won't remember your details, go up to 'prefs' on the menu at the top of each page and clear your cookies and reset your preferences.

Just rationalising Peter. Magpies.net was spread over three different machines and I've been pulling it all together onto one new one.

The new server is me, just as the old one was.

Third time lucky? Third time at what?

It's ok Peter, not you - just a little not-so-private joke between magpiemad, Black_White and me.

Shouldn't be allowed.

Just a wierd little prob Mike. When I open the chat page the little window, the one that normally says "this window remains open while your in chat" or something similar, well at the moment it has the BB forums page contained in its small confines!

Hard to read but interesting...now I'm going to see if it links to the forums.....
Yep, full links.

Thanks Craig, I think it's just the domain name servers catching up with the change. Some people are having strange password problems as well.

Internet lesson: Computers on the internet use numeric addresses (ip addresses) to find each other on the internet. People are better with names than with numbers, so we use names (domain names, like www.magpies.net) because it makes life easier. The only trouble with that is that somewhere along the line the names that we understand have to be turned into the numbers that the computers understand. Bring on the domain name servers (DNS).

Domain name servers carry a database of domain names and ip addresses and match one to the other. So when you type in a domain name, the request goes to a domain name server which supplies the ip address and everyone's happy... until.. you change a site's location - which is what happened to this site last night. So suddenly we have a new ip address, but the same domain name.

It takes anything up to 2 or 3 days for all the domain name servers to catch up with the change, so some are dishing out the old ip address and some the new one... and you get all sorts of strange things happening.

The good news is that they all catch up with each other sooner or later and everything smoothes out again - we just have to cope with the goings on in the meantime.

The little window is working fine for me and it will for you (tomorrow probably) and all the password problems will go away (they will... I know they will).

As Mike knows, I've been having problems accessing the BB. Couldn't get into it at work for 24 hours then suddenly yesterday it was fine. Tried getting into it at home for the first time yesterday and it wouldn't open at all - hopefully it will be right tonight. Can't miss out on my daily Nick's BB fix!!!

Thanks again for everything you do for us Mike.

GO PIES!
Marg
