Angry over merger, students follow teachers' lead
March 05, 2008

HUNDREDS of students at an outer-suburbs secondary school have taken the lead of their teachers and walked out on strike.

At least 700 students at Sunbury College left their afternoon classes to protest against a proposed merger with nearby Sunbury Downs College.

Sunbury College students said Sunbury Downs had a bad reputation and if their teachers could go on strike, so could they.

Teachers at Sunbury College have walked off the job twice recently as part of the Australian Education Union's fight for better pay and conditions.

Under the proposed merger, students from years 7 to 9 would take classes at the Sunbury College campus, and years 10 to 12 would go to Sunbury Downs.

Sherrife is hardly a teacher, more akin to a dictator.

I have had my son attend Sunbury Downs and my daughter’s attend Sunbury Secondary. They are totally different in the way they do things. This decision would be at the hands of a bureaucrat looking at the bottom line (dollars). Sunbury downs would be like an old technical College and Sunbury secondary would be like the old type high school. Downs has always had more problems than Sunbury secondary simply because it has three times the amount of students. It does not take rocket science to work that out and the article is biased about striking teachers. More students more teachers which would mean more teachers on strike which would mean more noticeable at one school as per the other. The problem with Sunbury it has grown so big and as usual no infrastructure has been set in place to cope with it. You just do not have kids who live in Sunbury attend it’s all the outside areas. Diggers Rest, Goonawarra, Riddles Creek and the list rolls on. But hey never let the truth affect a goods story.

Looks like they are learning how to put in their time post-school whilst they are receiving the dole.

How else do you propose that they stand up for themselves? Online petition?

Interesting that we seem to be going somewhat down what I understand the American system is. Instead of having primary and high school, they're starting to move to 3 groupings. Roughly, prep to grade 5; 6 to 9 and 10 to 12.

Sort of makes sense in a way as it reduces the range of care needs.

As for the kids striking? Why not? Like most kids need an excuse to skip a half day at school anyway?

Certainly looks like protesters of tomorrow in the making.

Warring students from Sunbury College and nearby Sunbury Downs College clashed over a proposed merger of the schools.

About 50 students from Sunbury College ran through Sunbury Downs College, and a fight is believed to have broken out before teachers put their classes into lock-down about 10am.

Lets not belittle the actions of these people. The strike is far more political than "a day off school" would suggest.

Good for them, hope they get what they want.
