Injured Tarrant to have scans

Collingwood forward Chris Tarrant returned to Melbourne yesterday for scans on his injured hip rather than flying to Darwin with the rest of the team for an educational trip.

Tarrant, who was forced off the field during the third quarter of the Magpies' 11-point loss to Fremantle at Subiaco last Sunday, is set to have scans today, after the club confirmed he had hurt his hip, and not his groin as first thought.

"We're not quite sure how it's going to be but he's actually gone home to Melbourne so we'll find out (during the week)," Collingwood's general manager of football operations, Neil Balme, said yesterday.

Coach Mick Malthouse said the decision to return to Melbourne and not accompany his teammates on their visit to northern Australia showed "what sort of a kid Chris Tarrant is".

"He wanted to get back to Melbourne to get early treatment," Malthouse said.

The club's other injury concern of the weekend, Anthony Rocca, accompanied the team to Darwin yesterday, but Balme said the club would not know for a few days the extent of his injury.

"He's a bit sore but we're hopeful that it's only sort of a bit of soreness but we won't know for a little while yet. We've got physios up here who will treat him so we'll see what happens," he said.

Rocca, who came off in the final term of Sunday's match with a suspected hamstring complaint, would not have a scan, Balme said. He said the Magpies were hopeful of regaining Brodie Holland (hamstring), Jarrod Molloy (broken toe) and Nick Davis (ankle) for their round-13 encounter with the Kangaroos at Colonial Stadium on Saturday week.

All three face fitness tests in the lead-up to the match.
