Post subject: How Collingwood would look with regional zoning | |
|
http://afl.com.au/News/NEWSARTICLE/tabid/208/Default.aspx?newsId=71149
Quote: | HOW WOULD AFL teams look if the old suburban and regional zoning rules still applied?
In the days before the draft – and before the introduction of non-Victorian teams to the competition – clubs recruited players according to their home addresses
B: Jake King, Max Hudghton, Nathan Lovett-Murray
HB: Heath Shaw, Shannon Watt, Max Rooke
C: Heath Scotland, Jordan Lewis, Andrew Lovett
HF: Brent Stanton, Travis Cloke, Trent Cotchin
F: Ben McKinley, Anthony Rocca, Ben Johnson
Ruck: Matthew Kreuzer, Nick Stevens, Brent Harvey
Inter: Cameron Cloke, Matt Maguire, Brent Moloney, Patrick Veszpremi
The Collingwood side would be one of the more even outfits going around. The Magpies would draw on a strong football breeding ground in Melbourne’s northern suburbs as well as having a foothold in Western Victoria. |
Not the strongest side, but boosted by father son |

This confirms what i've always said, that we got shafted with the zones for all those years, while Hawthorn were made to look good with the best areas. _________________ Tubeway Army 1979

On the AFL site it says that Hawks zone includes West Gippsland (which includes Drouin), but I'm guessing East Gippsland (which would include Sale, where Pendlebury's from) is part of another club's zone.
I don't know much about the zones, so I don't know which club Pendlebury would've ended up in. |

I am not sure if I can quantify the answer. Is that a rhetorical question? |

I think East Gippsland was Footscray territory. |

Raymond35 you are spot on.
There is a perfect correlation between population growth in that Eastern corridor and Hawthorns onfield success.
No other clubs zone grew in population like Hawthorns did during the 60's -80's. |

They had 2 booming areas, the one you mention, and Frankston-Seaford. Not only were they growing ,but they were areas where tons of kids played Australlian Rules football. What pissed me off even more was hearing so many stars from these areas mentioning they were Collingwood supporters (or StKilda) yet got roped into Hawthorn.
I'd love to know what crackpot came up with the zones, i grew up 5 minutes from StKildas ground, yet was in melbournes area. _________________ Tubeway Army 1979

Zoning was the first "lets give Carlton a premiership" scheme. The Cardinals, in their infinite wisdom, drew up a map of Victoria and surrounds and gave each club a supposedly equal share. They weren't of course - the best zone, Bendigo, went to their chosen people, while the crappiest zones went to their nearest rivals, Richmond and Collingwood. Collingwood's zone was based on Mt Gambier, South Australia, so all its zoned players went to play for Sturt and Norwood, including the Victorian, Phil Carman.
The 3 next best zones went to three ordinary teams, Hawthorn, North and Footscray who always voted with the showponies to retain their zones as a bloc, stopping any changes which required a three quarter majority of clubs. It was like the third runway at Mascot, as people woke up one morning and saw champion after champion trooping through Carlton's door.
The legendary Tom Sherrin, in charge of Collingwood at the time, refused to recruit interstate to make up the shortfall - the result was 9 finals losses in 7 years, and a wooden spoon. |
