I was wondering if anyone had any inside info on Marty's decision to return to Ireland?

A normally reliable source has told me that early in the season Marty asked MM to be able to return to Ireland for his sister's wedding. Apparently he was refused permission, but Marty said he was going anyway. From that moment, he never played another senior game.

This story may be complete shite, and Collingwood may have in fact bent over backwards to accommodate Marty, but looking back, it seems strange that he went from being one of our gun players, to a VFL player, and then out the door so quickly. Either way, it's a shame we've lost such a great talent.

It is a shame but you have to admit he stopped progressing as a player.

This game chews you up and spits you out if you don't progress. Lonie, Cloke, many others - career over by mid 20's because they couldn't show us more.

Marty had stalled - don't know why. Probably just homesick

No he was told he could go, but he would then need to fight for his spot on merit and VFL form. Permission was on the proviso we did no have a crippling injury list though

Marty agreed to this, and then deceided end of year to go home. Good for him move on

Marty wasn't playing good footy this year at all [just ask my supercoach team!!] & IMHO was afforded plenty of opportunities at senior level to turn it around - but couldn't!

For whatever reason I don't know but I doubt it's because his sister got married - He's from Ireland not Tasmania!

Again, let me say that this was a real shame - A very talented kid with brains!

he made it on to the emergency list a few times too when he came back (how many times?), so that would suggest otherwise

I'm just glad the we got to see (and utilise) his undoubted talents in the games we had him. Marty was a pleasure to talk to and I loved the way he went about his footy. I can't remember ever seeing him caught with the ball such was his ability to dispose of the ball, even if it was only one of those funny kicks.

I hope he fulfils all his goals and ambitions back in Ireland.
