Mike Sheahan wrote an article in a recent edition of the Herald Sun questioning the importance of ruckmen in the modern game.

Of the 14 AFL clubs to announce best-and-fairest results, just one has rated a ruckman in its top three.

It is a staggering statement about contemporary ruckmen. About the game's evolution, the possession game, the absolute refusal to kick to a pack.

Sheahan is spot in alot of ways. With most sides playing the "run and carry", handball dominated game it's not as important to have big men that can stand out in a pack and take marks.

However...Collingwood doesn't play the run and carry game, along with St.Kilda and Brisbane, who are three sides still known to kick more than handpass. Geelong play a run and carry game in their back half but they tend to kick it when they're in their half of the ground. We also play along the boundary lines meaning the ball goes out of bounds a lot more for us than it does for most other clubs. Due to us always playing along the wings it comes as no suprise that Darren Jolly had a league record 53 hit outs in a game against us when we played Sydney.

For most clubs it is becoming more and more important for ruckmen to also be able to play like midfielders like Paddy Ryder, Adam Goodes, Nick Naitanui or Matthew Kruezer.

However due to our style of play Jolly, Fraser and Wood as well as guys like Leigh Brown and Travis Cloke are extremely important for us.

Just as Gardiner and King have been for the saints. As well as Clarke has been for the Lions and Leuenberger is expected to be provided he gets over his injury troubles.

I gather you don't think we should have got Jolly?

No way! I think that the way Collingwood plays the more big guys we have the better.

Clever use of stats, but here is the important bit for us, another ruckman named Darren Jolly came 4th in his clubs best and fairest, and he plays for us now.
