NBA legend Charles Barkley labels AFL players "idiots"
http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,26234498-23211,00.html

Quote:
"I don't want to insult the Australians (but) I am like, 'These guys are some damn idiots'," Barkley told the Dallas affiliate of ESPN Radio.

"Nobody plays football without pads every week for three, four or five months and don't make any money.

"At least in the NFL, you are going to kill yourself and ... you get to be a millionaire after it's over."

Now for some fun with Charles, check out his golf swing...

Just another example from America who cannot see outside their own world. He fails to realise they have a population of 250 mil approx and the starting wage would be 1 million dollars US to $50k here for a rookie.

What he should realise if there was no NBA he would have been a circus act.

His general point that AFL players are underpaid is correct, especially when you consider that TV rights alone, are currently worth $100 million a year. Someone is making a lot of money out of the game, but apart from a handful of players, the rest are actually on pretty ordinary money. This is especially the case when you consider that the average number of games played by an AFL player is only around 50 or so.

The 16 clubs pay between 7 & 8 million dollars a year in player salary so thats 112 - 128 million dollars in players wages collectivly per year.

I'm pretty sure his comments were tongue in cheek, as in, "Man, these dudes are idiots. They play football with no padding and get paid jack."

I agree. Our players get paid SFA compared to sports around the world. Average lifespan of a footballer is 3.5 seasons, avarage money is about 125K. Most (I said most) pro sports players don't have much upstairs ... without anything to fall back on, AFL is not teh wisest career move.

The chances of making a living off of AFL are SLIM. Only a select few are good enough to demand top dollar and build a post-footy career out of it.

We do play 'for teh love of teh game', but now that's it's fully professional, players need to earn more IMO.

Yeah probably, but don't forget the AFL is structured differently to most sports. The AFL also supports the grass roots to an extent in Australia, though you'd think there would still be a hell of alot of money still left over.

Slightly off-topic, but I always wondered how many professional leagues in the world pay their CEO more than their highest paid player?

I think the TV money is actually closer to $150 million per year (but who's counting), but let's not forget, this is before gate receipts or sponsorships are factored in. Collingwood alone has a turnover of $50-60 million p.a.

Bit out of context I'd say.

What Raw Hammer said was correct, he wasn't actually insulting or having a go at the intelligence of any of our guys, but simply that they aren't paid enough for what they do.

Having said that, he isn't the brightest of guys, and that golf swing is horrible. I could finally beat someone off the tee!
