I think it's Junkboy who did a bit of research into the life of Admiral collingwood a year or so back...been a few letters to The Age this past week concerning him and Nelson's last words, which where reputed to be "Kiss Me Hardy" (Hardy was Nelson's flag captain I believe.

Magpies' proud naval history

David Pappas (9/10)is correct regarding the dying words of Admiral Horatio Nelson. It is not generally known, however, that Nelson also wanted to ensure his lover, Emma Hamilton, would be cared for.

The admiral decided a monthly benefit should be paid to her, but which of his officers could he entrust to be alone with a grieving Emma? After all, sea dogs will always be sea dogs.

Eventually he chose Vice-Admiral Collingwood - a name which to this very day is redolent of valour, loyalty and daring.

As Nelson himself put it: "Good old Collingwood for Emma. He knows how to pay the dame."

not quite sure of the historical validity of this, but it's an interesting one, coincidentally, the London Magpies met up under Nelson's column before going to watch the grand final.

I think we all could use a bit of cheering up this day, and some of the spirit and courage of Admiral Collingwood

"..we flew at them as a hawk to his prey, passed through them in the disordered state in which they were, separated them into two distinct parts and then tacked upon their largest division.." -- Captain Cuthbert Collingwood, 1797
