I would like to express my most heartfelt sympathies to the families of the crew travelling on the Columbia spaceship.

The Columbia was Nasa's oldest operating ship and broke up in the Earth's atmosphere upon re-entry from space.

To think that I watched the shuttle trail across our sky last night, and then hear this devastating news is mind-boggling.

May we continue to prosper in space exploration.

Thanks, Pattie. Just read this and turned the news on.

After the failure of the Challenger, the shuttle program was shut down for three years. I'm wondering what implications this has for the 3 man crew of the space station.

Won't hurt in the short term Magfan; http://www.interfax.ru/one_news_en.html?lang=EN&tz=0&tz_format=MSK&id_news=5617918

But long term it will have an effect re building the station itself.

wow i agree with u aswell Pattie, this is such a sad thing 2 hear! But like their families said they new the risks and they would have been more shattered if they werent allowed to have gone on this experiment!!

I just hope that they are in a safe and happy place right now and lets not let their memory be forgotten!!!

Any loss of human life is sad..dont get me wrong but all this crap and its only because there yanks..i agree with CQ i find it disturbing no one posted about the train horror in sydney, more so in sydney they were on the way to uni and work and expected to get there, the astronauts however are well aware of the risks.

i dont believe its just because they are "yanks" that gives this attention.

As a space site says:

"Astronauts have an unaccountable hold on us. They are explorers. Curious, humorous, serious, daring, careful. Where they go, they go in peace. Every kid wants to be one. Astronauts are the essence of humanity. They are not strangers. They are us".

I dont think it would matter if they were from America, New Zealand, Vietnam or Russia. Its the fact that we are able to see this death and destruction in our living room and the shock that knowing that this time it isnt simply a fictional movie.

I feel greatly for the innocent loss of all life. I express my deepest sympathy to all those who suffer as a result of this, whether it be those that died in the shuttle disaster, those that die in terrible rail disasters such as that in sydney, those that die from incurable disease, to those that die after being hit by motorists while innocently riding their push bike.

I do understand that tragic events coming out of the US are commonly magnified in their scale, however to simply state that its only because they are yanks that makes it such big news is not necessarily correct. I believe it is the uniqueness in the circumstances of this tragedy and its ability to tug at the strings of most kids and kids at heart and the common dreams they share throughout the world is what really makes this so sad to so many.

I believe it is a bit naive to suggest that all this crap is only because they are yanks.

As one who has ventured out at roughly 20 past 9 at night on many occasions during the last 2 weeks to watch the space shuttle fly over, i cant help feeling a different type of closeness to it and the disastrous fate that it encounted.

However this does not mean because i havent made a post under a Sydney train disaster thread that my feelings and sympathies to those involved in that separate incident are any less intended.

The astronauts were well aware of the risks yes, but it doesnt make the tradgedy any less significant in my mind.

Rest in Peace to those souls that endeavoured to push the boundaries of human kind to areas uncharted. Rest in Peace also to those souls travelling to work and university and to all those caught up innocently in the tragic circumstances that are often just so unnexplainable and cruel.

Finally, Hope that we as a world, listen to those who provide us with inspiration and solution and act on what they tell us so that the terrible loss of even further innocent life is avoided in what would otherwise be the disastrous consequences bought about by war and fighting.

So your tellin us rowdy that if the space mission were chinese, russian, indian, arabic and if the mission had nothing to do with america we'd still be shocked and carry on like the world has come to an end..what are you smoking mate ?

Every day world tragedies we never hear about simply because the country involved and its people are not white or speak english our daily newspaper today was covered in this tragedy pages and pages.

People say the that space exploration will eventually help mankind what compete utter bullshit whilst the American evil empire spends zillions and zillions on space missions to improve what ever there trying to tell us...the world with many of its people live in real hardship and poverty..yeah what a great world we live in..and these same people are about to massacre civilian life in iraq..

And we ausamerican people bow to there every need..i dont call us australians anymore i now refer to australians as ausamericans

I just pray and hope the world doesnt suffer a shortage of toilet paper because they indeed would expect us to wipe ther backsides with our bare hands..and you know what some of us ausamerican people would only be too glad to do so.

I wonder what the american people are thinking the ones who live in subways and under bridges, the ones who cant afford medical insurance..i wonder what the people struggling for food in 3rd world countries are thinking...

I wonder ?
