Our forward line was one dimensional like St Kilda's. Sav struggled to run because of a bad knee over 18 months, leading to MM deciding it was time. He was also a shocking kick from 20 metres, like Anthony, and like his successor, Tazza. Taz was switched from a flank to FF with pretty good results resulting in the 02/03 GFs.

Yeah, our forward-line at that time was pretty much one-dimensional the way I remember it.
So, when the Big Sav struggled, so did the whole scoreline.
A pity, cos he had a lot of heart, very popular, loved the Club.
So happy for him now that he's been given the Anzac Day match medal. Congrats Sav, enjoy!

Yeah, was my fav player while he was there. Was always happy he was able to find new life in his career. Could never hate him (like Paul Williams)

That's exactly right.

Water under the bridge now though.

Sav Rocca is a bonafide Collingwood hero.

His goal per game average is up there with the best of them and certainly better than both the lads we have now.

He was a scapegoat and cruelly victimized.

The guy is Collingwood through and through and deserved better.

I don't remember being overly devastated at the time. He hadn't had the best few years in the late 90's and sometimes a change of scenery is the best means of rejunvenation.

Legend of the club though.

I recall it well and when it finally happened (de-listing) I was devastated too for Sav. Having been at the drawn Anzac day match I saw him play a blinder for the pies.

On one hand, he's a Collingwood great, on the other hand Mick sacking him for no real benefit angered me at the time. Here we talk about players being loyal and not go to GWS and then when I think back on Sav - he was willing to take a pay cut to stay.

Personally, I wished Collingwood retained him and he had retired at the club later on.

Yeah I was pissed off big time when Sav was delisted. I still MM responsible for a terrible mistake, premiership or not.

I hope Sav realises plenty of fans dont dislike him for playing with North.

Let us not forget, that he was pretty battered when we let him go.

And those who argue we would have snared a flag with him in 02 / 03, I say this. If Jarrod Molloy turned up in 02, we win, and if he wasn't badly injured in 03, we lose, but by not as much.

Loved him and took it pretty hard when he was delisted but thought it was the right thing to do at the time. Probably unrelated but I don't think T. Shaw helped his career by continually dragging him when the team was down and he was getting stuff all delivery. He was often made the scapegoat which used to frustrate the hell out of me. Ironically, his cause wasn't helped with the arrival of Rocca junior, Anthony was very inconsistent in his earlier days but in the end was probably seen as the better option because of his youth.

I was sad about his departure but saw it coming. I too felt that he was destroyed by average delivery. If only he had been spoon fed as well as Dunstall and Lloyd (not detracting from their ability). Won't say that 02 would have been different had he been there. In 03, we were monstered, plain and simple.
