Adelaide's draft bombshell

IN A SHOCK move, Adelaide has voluntarily relinquished its first two picks in Thursday night's NAB AFL Draft as a "gesture of goodwill towards resolving the [Kurt] Tippett matter".

The Crows chairman Rob Chapman announced the club's decision on Adelaide's website on Thursday, describing it as a common sense initiative that was in the club’s overall best interests.

The Crows have given up picks No. 20 and 54, and will now use picks 62, 81 and 95.

How bizarre. PR decision, I can only imagine, perhaps with the added desire of preventing a more severe sentence being given in the long run. Not sure it's supposed to work like that; surely the AFL will decide on an appropriate punishment regardless.

Edit: apparently not.

They may assess this loss as less severe than future draft positions or pools

If the AFL are daft enough to respond differently due to silly sanctimonious games like this after the Adelaide horse has well and truly bolted, they really ARE very stupid or even worse..... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

there could be more to this story that we know of . Strip them of their first 2 picks next year too . What are the crows making their own punishment up.

I agree. I'd been thinking that a post-draft penalty would have been more severe; after all, the AFL would have seen complete exclusion from this year's draft as a fairly sensational decision in its own right; any other penalties (deferred for at least a year) would have to make up for that lack of immediacy. It seems Adelaide have thought much the same — seems the most sensible explanation here (perhaps along with a few sponsor brownie points for "acting like a responsible corporate citizen", although the irony is that a more responsible act would have been to acknowledge their guilt and simply cop whatever was coming to them).

Ahhhhh it's Vlad that's brokered the deal

"We are in ongoing discussions with the AFL," Chapman said.

"This gesture forms part of those discussions and is made in good faith."

Now Melbourne can give up 'Tanking' pick four and 'Tanking' pick Viney.

Then we will have picks 17, 18, 19 and 36.... sweet

Wow, entree penalties before a finding's even been made! Justice, AFL style. Can you imagine if our courts ever gave this kind of thing a go? "Let's agree that you get 6 months in jail now, and we'll get back to you with the real sentence when we've ascertained your guilt." Laughing

I love that they just make up the rules as they go along.

Good play by Adelaide, strip themselves of their first two crap picks (20 & 54) in a compromised 2012 draft and hopefully keep better ones next year.

Great outcome for us but good for the AFL as well as allowing a team to go into this years draft unpunished for already admitted salary cap breaches wasn't a great look.

The AFL aint the VRC.

Personally I can't help but feel that this Adelaide "decision" has the Vlad fingerprints all over it.

For once good on him.
