The Offseason:
It was a baptism of fire for Nathan Buckley in his first year as senior coach of Collingwood, and as he heads into his second season at the helm, with a sufficiently differently looking squad, than the one in inherited from Premiership coach Mick Malthouse. Buckley made the bold decision to make a whopping 14 changes in the 2012 offseason, cutting away the dead wood, and bringing in personnel to play a key role from straight off the bat. Collingwood were super active in the trade and free agency period, and undoubtedly came off as massive winners.

Another super successful altitude camp in America, this time in Utah, as opposed to it’s more traditional Arizona camp will again be the platoform to another successful finals campaign. The redevelopments of the Westpac Centre, in conjunction with it’s soon to be new training ground, at the former Olympic Park, which will measure the same dimensions of the MCG, justifies what a financial powerhouse Collingwood is.

TRADE/DRAFT/FREE AGENCY:
Sharrod Wellingham was traded off for a first round selection, and Collingwood immedateily replaced him with Hawthorn winger, Clinton Young. Nathan Buckley also sent Chris Dawes packing to Melbourne, also in return for a first round selection, as the Pies had lured Quentin Lynch from West Coast earlier in the free agency period. Later in the trade period, Collingwood also snatched up Carlton’s runner-up best and fairest from 2010 – half back dasher Jordan Russell, to finish the trade and free agency period with three senior players, two extra first round draft picks, whilst in hindsight lost next to nothing when you compare what was lost, and what was gained.

It's unheard of. A team that goes as far as a prelim, has three first round picks in the draft. The pies got three consecutive first round draft picks in the National Draft – after Adelaide decided to turn their first round pick in, as a “good well gesture” as the Kurt Tippett Saga blew up. Derek Hine couldn’t get Brodie Grundy’s name out fast enough, as he fell into Collingwood’s lap at pick 18, followed by his best friend Ben Kennedy at 19, and fellow South Australian Tim Broomhead at 20, and the very, very underrated but highly regarded Jackson Ramsay at pick 38.

DRAFTEES:

There is no doubting that Brodie Grundy was one of the steals of the draft, after initially thought to be a top three selection. His ability to hold his own in the ruck, and move forward to kick important goals means his versatility will be utilized often by Nathan Buckley.

Ben Kennedy is a smooth operator. The best friend of Grundy lined up at the centre bounces with the big ruckmen, and they know each other well. Kennedy will play as a small forward at Collingwood, where his speed, forward ferocity, and his elite skills on either side of his body really come to the fore.

Tim Broomhead was a bit of a shock selection with their third selection, but his talent has flown heavily under the radar recently. Broomhead is very much an outside midfielder, who uses the ball fluently, and is a serious threat when near goals.

Jackson Ramsey comes to the pies as the most interesting prospect, who missed a large chunk of the Championships due to injury. However, when he did player - he held the likes of Lachie Whitfield, and Jimmy Toumpas at bay with his great tagging techniques. He is however being groomed as a medium sized running defender, who can rebound from half back. Nathan Buckley has compared "Ramma" to one of his favourite players, Damian Hardwick in the way that he goes about his football.

What to expect:
With all the hype that goes along with being associated with the Collingwood Football Club, there is always room for improvement, no matter how good the list is. Collingwood’s weakest point in 2012 was the ruck department, which was bled dry on occassions when Darren Jolly had to be managed. At times, it was in this area that exposed the Pies, especially in their overall clearance and hitout numbers, which will need work in 2013. The Pies ranked 13th in hitouts in 2012, largely due to Darren Jolly being in and out of the team – that itself should be fixed with the acquisition of Ben Hudson, and the dominate Brodie Grundy, with the emerging Jarrod Witts and Corey Gault also thereabouts, providing considerable depth in the ruck department.

The leaky defence was also a major issue, which wasn't as together as it was in 2010 and 2011. It didn't help with Chris Tarrant, Ben Reid and Nathan Brown all succumbing to sizeable injuries all at once during the first half of the season, leaving little known Lachie Keefe to go at it alone at times. Heath Shaw was all sorts in 2012, as too was Harry O'Brien, both whoever came home strong. The absence of Nick Maxwell at times left the defence a little shakey, with the "On Field Coach" a key factor for the defenders.

The Pies will also want to capitalize on beating the other big teams – they were embarrassed twice by arch rival Carlton, and three times by bogey side Hawthorn, and also suffered interstate defeats by West Coast and Sydney – albeit difficult games away from home, they are games that give a mental edge.

Forgotten midfield dynamo, Josh Thomas finally looks as though he is injury free, the first since he’s been at the club, and will be looking to make his long awaited debut. Ben Sinclair started with a bang in the first half of the season, before fading away in the second half, ditto that Jamie Elliott and Paul Seedsmen who are primed for big year’s in the black and white, whilst Alex Fasolo will be looking for a breakout season, as he enters his third year.

A lot of Collingwood’s key performance indicators will be coming from the mature age players, who’ve made their way to club during the offseason, and through the rookie drafts. Clinton Young, Quentin Lynch, Ben Hudson and Jordan Russell are the bigger names, all who have been earmarked to play quite a bit of senior football in 2013 will play major roles in Collingwood’s Premiership push. But it’s the depth that stretches all the way to the rookie list, with VFL stars Sam Dwyer and Kyle Martin also in contention to be nominated rookies – who will be able to play from round one onwards.

The returning Luke Ball, Brent McCaffer, Lachie Keefe and Marley Williams will provide more depth, and an injury free preseason to Ben Johnson and Andrew Krakouer – who both made a come back in the last few rounds of 2012 will also be monumental to Buckley’s list management.

in every section of that article it points to every part of the list improving. combine that with a re-vamped game plan with a tighter defence and quicker transition into attack and no team will get near us.

There is potential down side too......

Jolly (and then we are relying on Hudson, who is older, or unproven kids)
BJ (age)
Didak (best is probably behind him. Hard to see him back at the 2009-2010 form)
Tarrant - is gone
Maxwell - may have the best behind him.
Ball - Coming off a knee. Will he be at his best? unlikely. Won't be the 2011 version you'd think.
Swan - Is the best behind him? Will age start to wear him down? Does the passion still remain?

So there are a few guys approaching the steep downward slope.

Regardless I'm positive about this season. No reason we can't mix it late in the year. But be mindful, there ain't all upside to our team. There will be reduced output/performance from some. We have to hope overall there net gain.

Everyone has written us off on the back of a disappointing end to last season....

At their peril, i say. Our list is probably the strongest in the AFL. Our depth is ridiculous.

The key is not in the potential and depth of the team but in the solid evidence of their performances this season mate. They need to perform well right from the start to justify the claim of being possibly the strongest list in the AFL. Time will tell..... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Looks like Lazza is only trying to calm Burnsy down somewhat! Getting older in the tooth and having seen all that water pass under the bridge can reduce your expectations. After all the hype of the preseason the comment Lazza makes is what we will all be looking for. The gel of the side will be vital and how we improve over the first 10 weeks will be key indicators. We have done well offseason and really can wait to see how things pan out. Lazza you must be happy with the injection of some hard players we picked up! Lynch Hudson Grundy Oxley and Martin Wink

Anything can happen, but I'm actually feeling pretty optimistic this season. We've recruited well, so if we can have a better run with injuries (could we have a worse one?) we should threaten the top 4 again this year. I'm excited. Mr. Green

Same here David. I think this is the heaviest we've recruited through the trade and draft period since 2009,and you know what happened the next year.

Some of our recruits will need to prove themselves in the first few weeks, but if the likes of Lynch, Young and Russell contribute in a positive manner and have an impact, then we look very good. I think the prediction of finishing 3rd is a reasonable one and that's where I would have placed us as well. A lot of people are tipping us to finish somewhere around 5-8, which I think is too low considering the quality we have in our side.

Anything under top 2 is a disappointment. We need this year to make it a stunner before the other clubs start picking off our players.

Yes Mossi, VERY excited indeed by the potentially fantastic additions to this season. That man Hine should be knighted by Collingwood for his astute assessments and needs-based recruitment. He is a legend!
In my opinion, it is great to have high expectations as long as they are realistic ones, as the unrealistic ones only tend to set you up for failure in my long experience with Collingwood. Good to be positive about the future based on solid evidence for that positivity rather than blind guesswork or pure hope. Rolling Eyes
My opinion is to stay calm, keep things real, watch closely and see how the team performs without us always wearing our rose coloured glasses. Like I said, time will tell.......... Rolling Eyes Cool
