I'm willing to make a personal contribution to the fund just to piss off Hawthorn supporters.

Pretty sure you wouldn't knock that sort of money back. Hope he goes, just to piss of my Hawthorn supporting mates.

I've never understood that logic. It's hardly like he's struggling to make ends meet at the moment, is it?

^ not too many people think like you David, I don't. Whilst I understand your logic and I have a friend who thinks the same as you and I'll listen to his logic, I don't always agree with it.

He can earn $1m at Hawthorn and clear approx 500k a year (if you did it straight down the line and 500k is approx, so don't judge me), or make almost 2m a year and clear 1m.

At 26yrs of age, he won’t make that kind of money again.

Setting you up for life, and being able to almost live a life style you have been accustomed to, is what he will look at.

I'll applaud the man if he stays a Hawk but I wouldn't be surprised if he goes.

he won’t get a 6yr contract with the Hawks and 6yrs guaranteed money at GWS means he can break down at 30 and he's set.

Though I must admit, ask me the same question when it’s one of our guys… My attitude was diff with Cloke, obviously.

He can set himself up, plus his family. What is there not to understand?

I understand staying for mate ship, but if I was being offered an extran $750k a season to go elsewhere I sure as a hell wouldn't knock it back.

Money's not the key to happiness, but it will buy you an introduction to some bloody impressive locksmiths.

Not sure what there is to understand. A footballers career is limited, and the thought process with most players is to earn as much as possible to set themselves up once they retire. Not every player wants or can get a media career after footy.
Financial security > loyalty.

$9 million is almost impossible to knock back
David when you get older things change
Setting yourself up for life gets a higher priority than just playing with your mates.

Having said that post career at Hawthorn will also be lucrative

OK, I get the need to 'set himself up for the future'. But he's getting that much money now (and will be for at least the next five years or so) that he could be ploughing it into savings funds already. Plus, he'll undoubtedly make plenty of cash after retirement from appearances, media spots, etc. (even if he doesn't get a full-time role in the football media or as a development coach down at some junior club in WA); and even if all that falls through, he'll be earning money from whatever actual work he does after this is all over (presuming his plan isn't to spend the rest of his life lying by the pool drinking cocktails).

Sorry, it just sounds like greed to me.

Mybe he wants to do something humanitarian with it

Probably not but maybe Wink

I can see your point, I guess it depends how strong the ties that bind are. He is not a Victorian, so there is that. If he intends to one day go home to WA he won't be so popular as in melb as an ex hawthorn player, rather than a west coast/Freo one.

It is massive dollars. He may have big dreams, he has a clothing company, he could expand. I don't see it as greed, if people think he is worth that good luck to him. Greed to me is seeing a truck load of free food and taking more than you need when other are hungry too. I think footy players, models actors etc etc are all overpaid, but they must be worth that as a commodity to whoever is paying the bills. Why not take it? You could ask Dawes about loyalty in footy working both ways.

I hope he does.

But that's only to see my daughters boyfriends old man cry!

The difference is that Dawes was essentially told that he was no longer required. It was in his professional interests to look elsewhere. If Franklin moves, on the other hand, it would be all about the money. I understand, say, Ron Todd doing that back in the day when life was genuinely hard for many footballers, but for someone who's already rolling in it, I just don't understand how that can be a good enough reason.

IF someone offered me twice as much money to do the same job, I'd take it.

Even if I was on $200,000 a year I'd take it.

Yep, it's greed, and its pretty easy to understand too.
