Why would we want a coach who has never played the game at the top level?

IMO, you hire the best. If you aren't the best, then you don't get the job. |

The AFL just appointed a CEO that has never played the game at the senior level; does that mean he shouldn't have been appointed? _________________ Four legged animals good, two legged animals better |

We also have a President of the club who has never played the game at the Senior level but most would agree he's done a pretty good job of running the club. _________________ Four legged animals good, two legged animals better |

Hiring someone based purely on gender is dumb. If they are the best person for the job then fine, but I'll trust the clubs judgment over a sob story in the age. |

dalyc, there is a difference between hiring someone in an administration position, and hiring someone as a coach. |

No one needs to pack their bags. We aren't the paupers, where the richest and biggest club in the land. And we only need to beat a teachers salary to give this accredited coach a go.
Remember it wasn't too many years ago that black people were not considered good enough to play professional sport. Purely because of their race. Someone eventually gave a black person a go and hence proved the prejudice unfounded.
If someone doesn't give a woman a chance to prove price themselves how will we know? And even if she gets an opportunity and fails doesn't mean that all women are therefore incapable of doing it. _________________ Four legged animals good, two legged animals better |

From all accounts we have one of the best groups of development coaches in the league. Any club can beat a teachers salary, it's not up to the pies to just hand out jobs because we have more cash.
If she was good enough to coach at AFL level then a club would have picked her up. If she's that good, she probably would have been offered more than a $5k contract by now, even by a VFL club. |

Why not? She is accredited and highly recommended. She might give a club the edge they need to overtake their competitors. |

Wrong question. You are asking the woman to replace her current obstetrician with one who has never given birth (which can still be OK) and selecting the new obstetrician purely on the grounds that he is a man. That is beyond dumb.
If this job applicant is good enough to bring a real improvement to an AFL club, there is a fair chance she would have already been hired. The fact that she has not been hired by any of the 18 different clubs is pretty good evidence that that they don't think she's good enough. Clubs make mistakes sometimes - we all know that, clubs have been known to pass over good talents over in the draft only to see them star in the WAFL or the VFL and force their way in as a mature rookie - but no club is going to walk past the best coaching candidate if that candidate is going to provide them with a competitive advantage.
Most candidates who get passed over shut up and work on their skills before trying again instead of sooking about someone else getting "their" spot. She should do likewise. If she actually wanted to be an AFL coach instead of sooking about how hard it is, she should do it the same way every other aspiring coach does it: take a job with a lower league and show the world you have got what it takes. There are plenty of wannabe AFL coaches going around who have taken VFL and SANFL and WAFL sides to premierships. If they can't get a gig, why should another candidate with no top-level senior playing or coaching experience bar an unsuccessful trial period with the worst-run club in the AFL hope to do better?
Tell her to come back with a couple of premierships as a senior coach in the VFL or the SANFL and try again. If she's not prepared to put in the hard yards and establish some serious credentials in the game, plenty of others are. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |
