Mrs WPT, my oldest daughter & I are off to the land of the rising sun.

Any one been there in the last few years?

Any tips, places to visit that you think might be worth a look see?

At this stage we are spending 17 days there. Going to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima & some island off the coast (not the ones where I'd have to act as mediator between the Japanese & the Chinse navy's) but some other island.

Booked in walking tours of most cities & the odd day bicycle tour & brying to get the "alternative back lane" tours as well.

Ive been told to carry toilet paper (I always do on every trip overseas).

We've decided not to go to Mount Fuji & I'm giving the Tokyo fish market a miss.

Are you making the tax payers of Australia cover the cost?

Is this a fact finding mission?

Does your wife work for the ABC?

I can neither confirm nor deny the rumours about where I'm going, that Juni Morosi & Gina Reinhart are coming with me & that the money is coming from a certain Kemlani & colourful racing identities. It is not true that the Waterhouse family are paying for the trip.

I can confirm that we are travelling business class from Tokyo to Singapore via Taiwan with the highly reputable "Scoot Airlines" (take seat will travel ) en route back to Australia.

^Yeah, we've PM'd. Being an urban wanderer I'm not much of a tourist, but as I said to WPT, the big cities are a maze and it's hard to pick one joint from the next from the outside, so relying on the trusty Lonely Planet Scriptures is a must.

The fashion/design/architecture/indie street areas are what I love most about Japan (although the Okinawa trip was a lazy hotel-by-the-beach affair), though I live here in this region so the shine of palaces, fortifications, shrines and temples has kind of worn off! For others, all the traditional tourist sites will matter more.

^Nah WPT can just say he is there conducting scientific research Wink

And then he can claim it as an educational study into the response of humans when confronted with a decision by their governing authorities that is complete bollocks!

Embarassed Sorry WPT claim denied - the authorising authority has highlighted that you are currently a resident of Australia and therefore have plenty of opportunity to conduct this research at this time right here in Oz Shocked

And back on topic - have a great holiday! Very Happy

One of my Collingwood friends is currently living there due to work commitments. I've passed on your questions to him and will post his response for you.

Might even be able to attend the Footy there. They have a magpies team in Tokyo which he goes and sees. And he never misses our games either.

Thanks folks & thanks PP. Looks like we've paid for Japanese rail tickets that effectively get you on & off a few places.

Places we're looking at are:

Tokyo
Kiyoto
Osaka
& places in between
Hiroshima
Miyajima
Kanzawa

will try to get to Kobe.

Looking forward to the eating (as I invariably do)

WE've also got 4 nights in Singapore - where we went a few years ago - & while at times it can feel like holidaying at David Jones with someone sweeping up after you as go there's a few places I'd still like to see there: The Muslim & Indian areas let alone re visiting Chinatown - there's some brilliant eating to be had there too.

The ledger will now be squared with daughter no 2, while daughter no 1 is fishing her exams this week in bonny Scotland.

I went there in 2012, only for a week, to Tokyo & Mt Fuji.

My only advice is to avoid Ropongi (not sure of the spelling) at night - many stories of people (including some Aussies we met at the airport on the way home) being persuaded on the street to go to this bar or that bar, then they're drugged and robbed & wake up with no memory of any of it.

(yes yes, don't be 'persuaded', but they're very friendly the ones doing the persuading, and handsome/attractive)

Otherwise, beautiful place, wherever you go I'm sure you'll love it. The good beef is fantastic (we had a roast beef dinner worth $250 - work shouted Wink) no chewing necessary, just melted on the tongue. Mmmm
