When where the rules on tripping changed? used to be a reportable offence now it seems to be just a free kick and not even a 50.

MM, I think the reportable trip was for 'intentionally' doing so.

Accidental trip is a free.

Tripping was first outlawed in 1860. In 1995 trippiing by hand or foot became a free, 50m & reportable. In 1996 tripping by hand was made a free + 50m but not reportable. Tripping by hand became reportable again in 1999.

The umpire wasn't reported either, and he MUST have been tripping when he called that Dees goal back! I sure was! A complete umpire clanger going OUR way!? Has it happened? ever?

Thought it was actually a good decision. Was calling for Jetta (or whoever it was) to come back on their line, gave him a couple of secs to do so then blew time-off. Once time-off called play stops till time-on is again called. Happens all the time when players try to move the ball on when umps have blown time-off.

Tripping by foot is reportable (dangerous).
Tripping by hand is considered a 'low' tackle and hence just a free kick.

I thought so too...though technical, the Melbourne player stopped all be it briefly and so time off was called, thus to play on he surely has to do so from back on his line.

Definitely the correct call. The player was metres away from the mark and time off had already been called, no way he should have been allowed to play on. The umpire said as much at the time, don't know how the commentators didn't pick up on it.

Agreed, despite all the bleating of 'we were robbed' by the Dees fans

I thought it was reportable, I have seen two by hand over the last two weeks and each only got a free kick, it made me wonder because you can go years without seeing one (thankfully) and then they only free kick it.
