Post subject: NAB Rising StarReply with quote

I don't want to be premature or to pronounce him a lock for the award, but for mine (and sportsbet, who have him as clear favourite), Tom Langdon must be leading the Rising Star award this season. His form has been consistently excellent. I can't remember the last time we've had a rookie play so well, let alone one taken at pick 65. It really has been a remarkable season.

If his form holds, I don't see how he can be beaten for the award. He has held down a spot in a top 4 team, and in my assessment has been our best defender over the course of the season. He leads our team for intercept marks, has been our coolest and safest ball user from defense all year, and has rarely been beaten by his man.

Whether he wins the award or not, his season so far is definitely worth celebrating. And just to provide some context, below are all of the previous winners of the Rising Star. Note, no Collingwood players, and only two players picked past 50 in the draft. Could we be heading for a first and a third this year?

1993 - Nathan Buckley (Brisbane Bears) - Northern Territory Zone Selection
1994 - Chris Scott (Brisbane Bears) - National Draft, Pick #12
1995 - Nick Holland (Hawthorn) - National Draft, Pick #14
1996 - Ben Cousins (West Coast) - Father-Son Rule
1997 - Michael Wilson (Port Adelaide) - Port Adelaide Zone Selection
1998 - Byron Pickett (North Melbourne) - National Draft, Pick #67
1999 - Adam Goodes (Sydney) - National Draft, Pick #43
2000 - Paul Hasleby (Fremantle) - National Draft, Pick #2
2001 - Justin Koschitzke (St Kilda) - National Draft, Pick #2
2002 - Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda) - National Draft, Pick #1
2003 - Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn) - National Draft, Pick #36
2004 - Jared Rivers (Melbourne) - National Draft, Pick #26
2005 - Brett Deledio (Richmond) - National Draft, Pick #1
2006 - Danyle Pearce (Port Adelaide) - Rookie Draft
2007 - Joel Selwood (Geelong) - National Draft, Pick #7
2008 - Rhys Palmer (Fremantle) - National Draft, Pick #7
2009 - Daniel Rich (Brisbane Lions) - National Draft, Pick #7
2010 - Daniel Hannebery (Sydney) - National Draft, Pick #30
2011 - Dyson Heppell (Essendon) - National Draft, Pick #8
2012 - Daniel Talia (Adelaide) - National Draft, Pick #13
2013 - Jaeger O'Meara (Gold Coast) - Mini-draft, Pick #1

Dominated by midfielders but Rivers and Talia give hope a defender is in with a shot.

I'd love to see him win but can't help but feel they'll give it to a flashier player.

Got 11 games to grab a couple of crunching pack marks or hit the score board then.

If Langdon keeps his form up he'll poll very well in the Copeland Trophy let alone the NAB Rising Star.

KK, Dunstan and Aish all have legitimate claims as starting line up players for most of the season in their team.
Yes, ours is a superior team, but nonetheless they have impressed too

I'm with Inky on this one. I think he would be a clear leader at this point.

Got in just before he did.

I do note that the vote on his page is being dominated by Langdon with 44%, next highest is Dunstan with 8.4%. Josh Kelly has the least votes so is obviously no chance. Either that or he plays for a team that has no fans Wink.

This was also my thinking. I expected an Aish or a Kelly to be more likely, and this thread was to be more about celebrating his season whether or not he wins the award. But I do think he's a genuine chance. I'm certain he has had the best overall performances so far, and it's not as if he's up against an O'Meara this year, or even Jack Martin. None of the other rookies have been overly brilliant.

Looking at the stats, and Langdon stacks up quite well. Has not missed a game, is right up there in terms of disposals, especially considering he's playing defense not midfield, and is averaging a higher supercoach score than any other rookie.

Tom Langdon - 11 games, 18.9 disposals, 6.4 marks, 81.5 supercoach points
Kade Kolodjashnij - 9 games, 19.4 disposals, 4.8 marks, 77.9 supercoach points
James Aish - 11 games, 17.9 disposals, 4.7 marks, 72.0 supercoach points
Josh Kelly - 7 games, 15.6 disposals, 2.0 marks, 65.3 supercoach points
Luke Dunstan - 10 games, 20.3 disposals, 4.1 marks, 79.4 supercoach points

Unfortunately, Langdon is ineligible for the Rising Star Award under the "He Plays For Collingwood" rule.

Midfielder. That's who will win it. He gets lots of the ball each week. I would love Langdon to win, but seriously defenders have little chance at awards these days.
