Would a banning of Essendon affect Collingwood in a major negative way?

I'm sure we'd play ANZAC day against someone else and it would still be huge even against the doggies or norf. The return H&A game is a blockbuster so the gate is split anyway but if EFS were banned it might affect the lesser clubs as the 6 blockbusters EFC have 2 vs us, 2 vs Carlton and Richmond would not be there to go into the equalisation fund.

I personally think they should be thrown out for a couple of seasons so all admins of Clubs get the message about cheating. The PC "oh he/they made a mistake" line people bring out when someone is caught cheating needs to be pulled up and it's time to make people responsible for their actions with serious consequences.

I would miss hating them more than any other team that's for sure. Who knows what will happen once lawyers and all the other stakeholders get involved. It will cost Essendon heaps in legal fees and no doubt the more viable teams will be expected to chip in if they are to survive financially and somehow don't end up with a pile of banned players.

It won't happen.

What might (and should) happen is that a large number of Essendon players get rubbed out for 2-5 years exactly as any other drug cheat does in any other sport. (Swimming, weightlifting, running, cycling - why should football be any different?)

If that were to eventuate, Essendon would be fielding what amounts to a reserves team for a couple of seasons. That would be a just and fitting penalty.

Notice that the penalties handed down to the club already are administrative penalties for administrative crimes - essentially punishing Essendon's appallingly bad management procedures and decisons - and have nothing to do with the looming rightful penalties for the drug-cheating players.

I'm sure once a certain number or % of players are banned the Club is out automatically under WADA law.

That's where it gets cloudy, what can happen is WADA/ASADA can step in and ban any official or coach (hello smiling James) who was in charge of a group at the time, but banning a whole sporting club is harder to achieve.

More likely that if ASADA/WADA finally grow some balls and charge all those involved that only individuals will be suspended, and not the club as a whole.

It would be entirely unfair to those who have acted fairly and who support that club to lose it based on the doings of a few.

As for the thread poll, no it wouldn't hurt us, we could cover the financial hit that comes from a lower gate taking versus Essendon but it would mean 1 less side we have to contest with for the flag.

would you think the afl might consider a loan system whereby club rookies are loaned out?

The agreement between ASADA and the AFL gives the AFL the right to impose penalties. However the AFL is a signatory to the NAD (national anti doping ) scheme so a slap on the wrist should not happen. Big international clubs have been banned other penalties included loss of draft picks so basically the dopers are £$%$ed.
