Here are some of our High Draft Picks that have been Friends or Teammates:

2005 - Daisy and Pendles

2012 - Grundy and BK

2014 - De Goey and Moore

I think he does this as he Thinks it Makes it Easy to keep the Players at the Club IF they have Mates from Underage Footy.

You Agree?

Is that why Hiss and I have been invited to the draft camp?

What about all the other years? I doubt a professional club drafts mates for mates.

No, he does not do it every single draft.

A little respect, Dave. We have one of the best in the business. Don't disrespect him with silly claims.

Dave, I think the mate angle is rolled out as an extra benefit of certain decisions in part to aide in the selling process that goes on with fans. The problem with the draft in AFL is that it is really a couple of years before you can make an assessment of success of a particular draft class. Adding things like, "these guys are really good mates" so its going to be easy for them to settle in is one thing you can point to in the interim to tide over fan anxiety. Remember that they also linked Broomhead and Scharenberg (and Aish before we passed on him) to the Adelaide boys of BK and Grundy.

One thing that may happen (subconsciously of course) is that when you spend a lot of time scouting a Darcy Moore, you cant help but notice the other guys at the game.

I understand from discussions with Hine that Thomas was highly touted in 2005 and when they went to scout him, the recruiting team noticed the sublime talent of Pendles. They weren't specifically there to look at him, but he caught their eye because of the amount of time they were at Dale Thomas games.

Suspect it was similar with de Goey. Remember we also appeared pretty keen on Laverde as well for a while there and he was also in that team. I wonder if that was simply because of the time we spent watching that team.

With that said, I think De Goey looks like a gem and the perfect choice at number 5.

I also think its a really good point from Dave as it has been promoted by the club A LOT in recent seasons (the mate factor).

Precisely, Dave. When you have a couple of good choices on your radar and there is nothing to pick between them, why wouldn't you go for the one who is mates with another one you've already picked?

See it Moore and De Goey. Both Re-Signed early and at same time.

De Goey even said staying with his Mate Moore made him to Re-Sign more.

That hopefully continues

Imagine if they drafted a couple of blokes and discovered they had a long running feud and hated each other's guts. Confused

Good point, which goes further to prove Daves observation.

Well done Dave, good spot.

dave, you make a good point. whether by accident or design it never hurts to have a friend at your workplace. those familiar with employee engagement surveys will recognise the question that ask whether you have a "best friend" at work. those who do are generally more engaged in their work and workplace than others. we all do better when we're surrounded by people we like.

You're right Dave. DeGoey and Moore could hardly stop hugging on draft night and they are both future leaders for sure.
The workplace scenario is a good one too. It's just like here in Nick's BB. If we're surrounded by friends we're more likely to come back and keep the board healthy and strong. Shocked Shocked
