Post subject: Sterotypes of Newspaper you ReadReply with quote

This comes from the Gameday Thread.

I said that People who read the Herald Sun watch Commercial TV in CH 7-9-10

and

People who read the Age and Australian watch Channel SBS and ABC because they want to look Different and Smarter then there HS and Commerical TV People.

You Agree?

I think you're largely correct, though it's not really about 'wanting' to look a certain way. It's just that different people are drawn more to different types of news sources – broadly speaking, the former group tend to prefer more entertaining, easier to digest and conservative (though not necessarily Liberal Party-aligned) journalism, whereas the latter tend to prefer more big-picture stories, serious news and a more progressive angle.

It's a lot more complex than that, though, when you factor in the kind of people who read The Australian (conservative but generally better educated), who would be more likely to watch the ABC over the commercial TV stations but might be more likely to listen to Alan Jones than ABC radio.

And let's not forget that Fairfax, which owns The Age, also owns 3AW radio, which is more likely to appeal to Herald Sun readers. And then you have to factor in Internet news sites, where The Age site is more or less for celebrity gossip nowadays whereas The Guardian has stepped in to fill that mainstream centre-left position. There are also big differences between the readerships of the Herald Sun website and its slightly more politically progressive (but equally trashy) news.com.au, which is generally aimed at younger readers. So, the demographics are a bit more complex than they might seem.

Sorry to shoehorn American politics into this, but here's what I reckon the supporters of each candidate would probably read if they were visiting Australia:

Donald Trump: The Herald Sun/nothing
John Kasich: The Australian
Hillary Clinton: The Age
Bernie Sanders: Red Flag
Ted Cruz: Creation Magazine
Marco Rubio: N/A (trick question – he doesn't have any supporters)

I read The Australian, watch Netflix and illegal downloads and consume my news and current affairs via the internet, mainly Drudge Report, Breitbart and Russia Today. News.com.au for Australian stuff.

Do agree the Australian has that Feel it is more for the Educated and I also get that Feel a little bit from The Age.

Where Herald Sun seems to be more a Workers Newspaper

Also the Australian seems more for the Well Educated and Upper Class People. Age also has it but not as bad

Herald Sun is more for the Working Class

Not really – I'm sure there are many Herald Sun readers who'd agree with you.

For the record, I read The Guardian, Crikey and occasionally the ABC site for local news and The New Yorker, The New York Times and The Atlantic for international news. I listen to Radio National and Newsradio (which often broadcasts the BBC World Service) and occasionally switch on ABC News 24 or SBS.

I was going to go with Green Left Weekly, but that one somehow seemed more apt. Wink

I only read News Sites and NewsPapers for Sport.

I do look at both SuperFooty and Real Footy for the NewsPaper AFL News

It's on the university entrance exam.

"Do you read the sun or the age?" Sun -0 points
"Do you watch ABC. Or Chaneel idiot box 9?" 9 - 0 points

Brrrrrrrrrrp nope, blue collar for you

The age and 9 gets you a teaching degree,

ABC and sun and your a journalist

Age and ABC (and a secret stash of people and truth) bingo, politician

My tv in my donga is either on Foxfooty or the ABC 24hr news.
The only time I read a newspaper is in fly in/fly out day on the plane.
