Without a doubt Clarkson is the standout coach of the modern era - however Longmire for me is clearly the next best. He is the only coach to have beaten Clarkson/Hawks on GF day and he has a game plan and strategy that adapts and suits his players strengths and weaknesses.

Buckley needs to know his list and adopt a game plan that exploits our teams strengths - Malthouse knew how to do it as all good coaches do.

I noted in the pre-game thread that Sydney had a different approach to this pre-season. They have a younger team and instead of pacing themselves into the year they have been winning pre-season games and were clearly ready to go in round 1! Longmire no longer needed to ease into the year - he could no longer expect his team to make the finals with their more limited experience so he has gone hard early and importantly he has gone hard with a game plan that suits his list.

Hard press and flooding allows his team to exploit their fitness - some great set-ups with a core of experienced mids gets the ball into hot spots quickly. Please Bux and co go to school on this game - don't write it off as a brain fart - study the opposition - this guy Longmire knows how to win - he is a premiership coach and quite frankly won a flag in 2012 when they were not the best side.

towards the end of last season we lost to the swans in a game we probably should have won. you can't tell me we lost all ability over a preseason where we did not lose a game.

Longmire has a dream run with the swannetees, that coal allownce thing, the sydney academy, gifting him top young talent, two of whom smashed us last night, plus a sub servient League, that jumps to the swans tune when they piss an moan. Like moving the game from homebush back to that peanut ground, which IMHO is totally unsuitable for modern day footy, its way too short. Helps when you have all that going for you, !

Was Longmire the same one who coached the Swans in the 2014 Grand final, where they put in an absolutely insipid display? They played then, the way we played last night. Sometimes, shit happens. You cannot judge a team or a coach on the back of one or even a few games. Overall, Buckley's teams have been very competitive over the past few years, but we have lacked a bit of class to match it with the best. I'm hoping we'll be better this year. The next few weeks will tell us one way or another.

We need to begin to play team-wise to the individual strengths of each player - that way no player will feel individually compromised, and their particular skills will be seen as a positive contribution. Team mates will adapt within the team plan to play to an individual's particular strengths. At the moment, I feel that the personal skills of some players appear to be compromised, as every player is beat over the head with 'team first' and this only leads to a level playing field of 'headless chooks', running around in mindless circles. Only Treloar stood out as doing so last night, and every other player seemed to be compromised between trying to play to their individual skills - and fully commit to a team plan that failed abysmally on the night. I think back to players like Daicos and Millane and Picken and Price whose individual brilliance contributed to the team plan which was not sacrificed when designing team strategies. Just my view ... a bit of a catharsis from last night!

exactly right - they are not that much better than us - our drills, intensity and game plan let us down! Swans played the ground well - they had more time to prepare - but still how hard is it to figure out?

Small ground means win the ball from the middle and get into the forward line quickly - when there keep it there as long as possible! When you have the ball move it along quickly because on a small ground players are picked up quickly and zones can be effectively applied.

the game plan didn't let us down. execution or lack there of let us down. we pride ourselves on winning the contested ball yet got spanked. the collective midfield who all can win their own ball simply didn't give us first use.
