We have quite a cohort* of ex-pies running around for other teams this year, so I thought it might be interesting to keep tabs on them and see how they're going as the season progresses.

(* a dozen, all up. Perhaps we could call them the twelve apostates?)

Here's the full list:

Paul Seedsman (Adelaide)
Played all three games so far, with only middling results – a high of 19 disposals on the weekend. Kicked his first (and so far only) goal for his new club in their round 1 loss to North Melbourne.

Dayne Beams (Brisbane)
Had a shoulder reconstruction in the off-season, only to get struck down by knee tendonitis. Hasn't played a match this year and no word on when he will return. Was their star player last year though, so no need for him to worry about keeping his spot once he gets his body right.

Dale Thomas (Carlton)
Has struggled with form in his time at Carlton, but was among their best in their round 2 loss to Sydney with 25 touches and 8 tackles. Seems to have been just OK last week.

Cameron Wood (Carlton)
Back onto the rookie list after a year in which he played nearly every game. Running around in the VFL at the moment; hard to know whether he'll get another chance at AFL level.

Michael Hartley (Essendon)
After a terrible run with injuries saw him dropped from our rookie list without a senior match to his name, Hartley has finally had his chance at a decimated Essendon. Got his first chance in their win against Melbourne in round 2, where he kicked a goal and otherwise picked up 14 touches. Seems to have had a quiet game on Friday night as they got smashed by Port (certainly had a lot of friends in that regard).

Danny Stanley (Gold Coast)
The foundation Suns player struggled to get a regular game for the first time last year, and ended up delisted. However, they picked him up in the rookie draft and upgraded him to the senior list again at the beginning of this season. Hasn't been given a game yet – I'm presuming this is probably his last year.

Heath Shaw (GWS)
One of the Giants' best players, and is dominating as usual. Picked up 30 touches in round 1 and 27 on the weekend.

Jonathon Ceglar (Hawthorn)
Has done very well at his new club, but still competing for the number one ruck spot. Has played two out of three games with only middling hitout totals and a single goal to his name. Ceglar was unlucky to just miss out on playing in two premierships in 2014 and 2015; perhaps he'll get his chance this year if Hawthorn win their fourth in a row.

Ben Kennedy (Melbourne)
After a frustrating career at Collingwood, he seems to have found his place at Melbourne. Played every game so far and was the Demons' best on ground in their loss to Essendon with three goals. Had a quieter game on the weekend.

Heritier Lumumba (Melbourne)
Had a rough off-season with injury and an overseas incident and didn't play round 1, but managed to get back into the side the week after. Doesn't seem to be setting the world on fire since he got back, but you expect him to be a walk-up start every week.

Nathan Freeman (St. Kilda)
No sign of his injury woes abating; has missed the first part of the season and much of the pre-season with a hamstring injury, and not expected to get on the park until round 6 at the earliest. He'll get his chance at some point, but who knows whether he'll live up to his initial promise?

Sharrod Wellingham (West Coast)
Had some minor knee and foot issues just before round 1 which have kept him on the sidelines. He seems to be picked most weeks when he's fit, so I expect he'll be back in the team soon.

Cheers! Impressive, though if we're talking VFL reserves, I suppose an AFL listed player would want to be dominating... still, sounds like he'll be back on the park sooner than expected, and that's great news (I have a soft spot for all former Collingwood players).

Oops! Bit of an oversight there. Embarassed Yes, Chris Dawes is out with a calf injury at the moment. Hasn't played yet in 2016.

'Cause they were 'pies', right? I like it. Laughing

(I could go with 'Thir13en Ghosts', but that's probably getting a little too obscure...)

I'd take Shaw and Beams back in a heartbeat, and Seedsman, Wellingham and Ceglar would make for valuable depth if nothing else. But we've been compensated well for most of them, so we can't really complain. Shaw is really the only one that still hurts.

(Oh, and wouldn't mind 2010-era Thomas and Lumumba running around! But then, neither would Carlton or Melbourne...)

Heater is the only one I was unhappy we off-loaded.

Not only was he a great player - and still is - but he was integral to our Collingwood spirit. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which was his undoing in the end, but I think it was wrong to trade him.

So far Adams has become a good player for us, but nowhere near the player Heater still is for GWS. That said, Adams best football is probably still to come, whereas Heater's has past. It is what it is.

If the saints can get Freeman healthy in one off season then it might come back to bite us on the bum big time.
