Post subject: Oxley up forward?Reply with quote

On the weekend, Oxley was played up forward in the VFL for a half before heading off to the G as an emergency.

He showed a bit, 10 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 1 goal 2 and a few inside 50's.

Can Oxley be turned into that mid sized forward like a Gunston?

He's the right height, he's got a great set of hands, quick enough in short bursts and is usually a pretty good kick.

Playing as a forward is no longer as instinctive as it used to be, each club has leading patterns they (try to) teach the forwards so there's no reason he can't learn to do it.

At 193 cm and a great mark, he'd be an uncomfortable match up for any defense, too tall and good overhead for a small defender but he's very mobile .

Assuming Swanny doesn't go on, in 2017 we would have the tall forward options of Cloke, Moore, Cox and White with the smalls Elliot and Fasolo and Blair as the defensive forward option.

Oxley could take Blairs role as defensive forward, like the Sack used to play at a similar height and build but Oxley is far superior overhead to the Sack.

Thoughts?

I didn't mind the move, personally. We've got a surplus of half backs, so why not? He could work as that last kick inside 50 from across half forward (and he can be a threat from outside the arc given the penetration he has on his kicking)...

How is his set shot? If not good, then no use in playing him forward. I suspect his field kicking may be better than his set shot iirc

Generally playing back he hasn't had a lot. Career wise he's kicked 7 goals 8 in 29 games but my observation is he looks like a steady kick if in that range where we'd expect players to slot them.

Admittedly, there's not a lot to go on there. But I vaguely recall testimony back when he was drafted in 2012 that he was a good set-shot (he actually did play as a forward for Redlands, at least some of the time).

I posted this about 6 months ago in preseason for the same positives mentioned above. It would be great to have the flexibility of rotating Howe and Oxley between back line and forward line.

I like the idea, but regardless of where he plays, he needs to toughen up and learn to hold his ground a bit more. He also needs to remain in the contest once the ball hits the ground. We know he's a great mark, but he needs to develop other traits as well if he's to remain on our list imo.

Like to see him played on a wing.

Hine drafted him on the back of his 7 goal performance for Redland in 2012.

Actually like the idea.

Wouldn't mind the coaching staff experimenting with him in the forward line if he plays in the seniors within the next few weeks.

I think we have two players who are not going to make it at half back - Oxley and Langdon - unless they can learn to tighten up and shut down opposition players - like we see with an experienced Howe and an inexperienced youngster in Maynard, who's still learning the game. The answer to me is as you say, play Oxley on the wings. Same with Langdon when he returns from injury.

I don't have an issue with Langdon in defense and think when he returns he'll release Howe to a more attacking role at HF-wing.
