Post subject: rethink the high tackleReply with quote

Hi guys I know this isn't Collingwood specific but after the free kick on Shuey last night I was wondering what others thought.
Let me say at the outset I don't want to see players KOed but it erks me when commentators and the like applaud players playing for free kicks.
Last night was horrible for Port - I don't think either team were going to get a Premiership this year but to go out like that was awful.
For those that missed it a tackle was made on Shuey on the buzzer - the tackle was low - around the bicep - Shuey twisted, lifted an arm and voila it looks like we need the homicide squad.

The decision cost them the game.
My feeling is that the rule should be high and dangerous - ie if there is enough force - tapping someone on the shoulder should be play on and playing for free kicks a free to the opposition. Selwood is prime example and how many times has he been KOed. The logic and advice on this is flawed. No so long ago a coroner proposed life savers wear helmets - its right up there with that kind of idiocy. I'm in a rugby state and the lads get cauliflower ears for the rubs around the head.[/img]

The umpiring was disgraceful all night.

I thought Port got the better end of the deal.... slightly.

Yeah I agree didn't like that the game was decided by that free, compared to what was let go at the end it was very soft

I expect port will remember that one for next year - If I were the coach I'd be playing that back just before the game

No free should have been paid against Petrie earlier, though - that idiot ran front on at Petrie while he was trying to mark. I'm sorry he got hurt but I thought they were going to pay a free to West Coast for interference.

I th ought it was just there, just. That was the best Final so far, the other finals were one sided and boring as batshit. great game.

Free was there every day of the week, except if you're an unlucky sod wearing a black & white jumper...

Obvious free, would have been paid in any game, anywhere.
I want to give credit to the Eagles player who was chasing down a ball going into the Port goals with the scores tied.
If he rushes it through, Port wins.
If he rushes it over the boundary, Port gets a free and wins.
So he smashes himself into the point post with the ball contacting the post resulting in a throw in and no deliberate - genius!

I was watching it on Foxtel and Dermie insisted that the free kick wasn't there. Then Jordan Lewis agreed with Dermie saying that the umpires spoke to the players at the start of the season to say that if the tackle started below the shoulder it wouldn't be paid. All I can say is that it was a free kick to me every day of the week ( and I was barracking for Port to win).

Didn't duck into the tackle and didn't lower his body to try attract a high tackle.

Definitely a free kick.

Not a free kick. Lifting of the arm is specifically in the rule
